Or do we swim and do we undertake to be of some helpfulness to somebody else, which will give us sotne kii,d of feeling for somebody else?" Elder flanks said everyone is expected to encounter difficulties. "The Church is organized on the earth to help us," he said. "That's why God organized it. The gospel program is for that purpose, but knowing that, we are not constrained to sit and weep our lives away. There is magic aplenty for us here and now. "It requires effort, obedience and maturitywhich I interpret to mean the wise use of freedom and faith to succeed at the job." He quoted from Lawrence Stern: "God tempers the wind to the shorn lamb." "That's exactly what Paul and Alma meant when they said that we will not get more trouble than we have the capacity to handle," Elder Hanks said, "That doesn't mean we'll always handle it very well. It means we could." Elder Hanks warned cl moral prob- lems which confront all people, not just single members of the Church. Elder Hanks, in his Sunday morning address, stressed the importance of service and said, "Some still interpret our program as a dance at the ballroom or some activity for enjoyment." Hanks in an address to the Utah Valley Special Interest Conference Sunday, July 6. "We do not go seeking trouble; that would be foolish as it could be. It will come, but we must learn to meet it as a friend. Learn from it, live with it, rejoice in the strength that comes as we undertake to meet it," advised Elder Hanks, an Assistant to the Twelve. Elder Hanks' message was a major highlight of the conference held at Brigham Young University July 3 through July 6. The conference attracted about 600 Young Special Interest and Special Interest members from the Utah Valley area to participate in 17 workshops and a variety of social activities which included picnics, dances and , ? Hanks stresses a point in Sunday , w address. 1 quoted from the writer, Will Durrant, who wrote, "After hunger, sex is the strongest instinct and the greatest passion. Nature is so infatuated with continuing the species that it dolls up women with beauty and gives men treasure for the chase. "But sex becomes such a fire and a flame in the blood that it can burn up the whole personality which should be a hierarchy of h Armony and desires. Today's society has overstimulated the sexual impulse, where our ancestors played down the sex instinct, bowing that it was strong enough without encouragement. We have 'olown it up with a thousand forms of advertisement and display. "Then we have armed sex with the doctrine that inhibition is dangerous. History shows that inhibition, the control Of impulse, is the first principle of civilization," The 10 a.m. meeting at which Elder Hanks spoke was preceded by a priest. hood meeting for the men, with John Madsen, director of the Melchizedek Priesthood MIA, speaking, and by a i - 1 tv - 1 I t , 1 I f., S r s 1 vi s meeting for the women which featured 1 Sister Marjorie M.
