Area conferences are part of what President Spencer W Kimball has described as "a great new adventure in taking the whole program of the Church out to the people of the whole world." After three days alone, fasting, praying and meditating, the great chief told his people that the church for the Maori people had not come among them yet. He said the church's missionaries would travel in pairs and would come from the rising sun. They would visit in Maori homes, learn the Maori language and teach the gospel in the Maori tongue. Traveling by whaler, the four missionaries headed for Tahiti. Elder Hanks died of consumption enroute and the remaining three ended up on the island of Tabuai, about 355 miles south of , Tahiti. Addison Pratt had spent time in the Sandwich Islands (Hawaii) some years before as a sailor and was overjoyed to find Tabuai natives "precisely" like those he was familiar with. lie stayed on the island while his two companions continued on to Tahiti. In less than three months, he baptized 10 persons, including the only six white men On the island. Ile soon organized the Tubuai Branch and ordained priesthood leadership. Elders Rogers and Grouard had little success on Tahiti because the French and the natives were fighting each other. After a few months they separated. Elder Rogers went to islands west of Tahiti and Elder Grouard went to the Tuamotu Archipelago. Elder Rogers had little success and, though he was the first preaident of the Society Islands Mission, created April 30, 1844, he was the first of the missionary trio to return home. On May 25, 1844, Elder Grouard baptized his first six converts. It was less than a month after his arrival on Anna, an island 245 miles east of Tahiti. Sept. 21, 1845, the first general meeting of the Church was held on Anaa. WErK ENDING JULY 12, Continued on page 1975,aCHURCtl 6 |
