DeVane played President Kennedy in 'Missiles of October," an ABC special that was nominated for best production Emmy. He also was nominated for an Emmy for his role in the film. 1 ,, 1 1 DeVane played Robert F. I used 'sine in its Broadway. Edward Kennedy, the last surviving brother, was not enchanted with DeVane's portrayal of President Kennedy' in "Missiles of October." This has been shown in the past weeks. In a National Enquirer interview, Sen. Kennedy said he did not care for the television special. He said he did not like DeVane's portrayal of the President, and he was not enthusiastic about the performance as Bobby Kennedy by M artin Sheen. DeVane confirmed, during a tele. phone interview, that he had sent a letter to Sen Kennedy about the Enquirer story. The actor said he first wanted to point out that Sen. Kennedy had said in the Enquirer interview that only Cliff Robertson's portrayal of John F. Kennedy in a movie, "PT 109," was a "convincing portrayal." Then ,.DeVane said he wrote to Kennedy: "Cliff Robertson can't carry my script for me. You must view 'The Sen. However, colloquial sense and I just didn't think of the double meaning. I'm really sorry about that." De Vane, a New York actor, first went to Hollywood in 1974 for Stanley Kramer's Judgmcrit series ;A ABC. He was in the segment titled "The Trial of Yamashita," which concerned the wartime Japanese leader. After that, he portrayed President Kennedy in "The Missisles of October," which dealt with the Cuban missile crisis. He was chosen, according to the network and the producers, because of his resemblance to President Kennedy. He used little make-u- p for the role. De Vane was nominated for an Emmy as best actor for this role but lost to Sir Laurence Olivier, who won the Emmy for "Love Among the Ruins."
