Tanner of the First Presiden cy traveled through South Africa on his 77th birthday accompanied by his wife and daughter After addressing a group leaders that evening in Johannesburg, Pres. Tanner was asked to step into the cultural hall. of local Church Strains uf Happy Birthday greeted Pres. Tanner as he entered the room and the cake was presented to him. He blew out the 77 candles with great gusto, local members reported JAPAN: Missionaries' Quick Action Saves Family The bravery and selfless concern ot two missionaries m alerting a family to the fire in their house, earned them recognition in Tokyo newspapers and helped spread a good name for the Church. Sister Nancy Ellsw'orth, of Rockville, Md., and Sister Ikue Sawada, Hokkaido, Japan, missionaries in the Japan Tokyo Mission, were walking to the local chapel when they noticed smoke coming from a house about two blocks from the church. His wife, Clara, is recovering from a heart attack and a bout with bronchitis. They are both diabetic. Mike Day, a teacher in the Jonesboro Branch, Louisville Kentucky Mission, has made dally visits for several months to help care for the needs of the Honeycutts. He really worried about them said his during the cold weather, mother, Sister Linda Day. They arent members of the Church, but theyre wonderful people. Nobody went to see them; they don't have any relatives in town. Every day after school Mike has stopped by to check on the couple. He O.-e- ar stokes the furnace, runs errands and takes them a hot meal prepared by Sister Day. It makes him feel good to know that he's doing something for somebody else, Sister Day said. When he first went to visit the Honeycutts, they said they couldnt believe there were people around who cared. Mr. Honeycutt wanted to know why Mike wouldnt accept any money. Mike told him that when he was in the service of his fellowmen he was only in the service of the Lord. The first Sunday in June has been designated as a day to visit the shut-inThe Honeycutts are grateful that Mike hasnt waited to make just one visit on a special day. The Laurel class president of the Jackson Hole 2nd Ward, Sheila Edwards, placed first in merchandising display competition at the National Distributive Education Clubs of America convention held recently in Hollywood, Fla. Sheila was among 52 top students representing every state in the nation as well as Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia.
