CAMP 1 PENDLETuN, CALIF S, fme moie Vietnamese members of the Church are expected at this sprawling U S Marine base from the staging area on Guam The refugees were expected during the Memoiial Day weekend, but had not arrived by Tuesday night. For those at Pendleton there was some joyous news, and some tragic information Presiding Bishop Victor L. Brown visited briefly with the LDS refugees the afternoon of May 22 and spoke to them at a hastily called meeting in a Quonset hut on base He conferred with Pres. Ferren L. Christensen, president of Newport Beach California Slake, which is assigned to take care of the refugees The area of Pendleton where the refugees are quartered is within the stake boundaries. One Cambodian member, Tran Hua De, a former officer in the Cambodian air force, is at Pendleton, according to death of the Cambodian wife and little child, said Pres. Christensen. He is in a different area of the refugee camp from the Vietnamese. The good news is that Sister Chau Nguyen Bich, wife of Tran Van Nhon, is smiling these days rather than weeping For weeks tier three youngest children, Tran Quoc Phuong, 10, Tran Thi Bich Thui, 9, and Tran Thi Bich Van, 8, were missing and no one seemed to know where they were. Brother Tran had placed them m the care of his sister, and put them on an earlier evacuation plane from Saigon The whereabouts of the youngsters had been unknown to the Church and family, but last week the children were lound m a Catholic orphanage in the Pacific Northwest The sister of Brother Tran, a member of the Catholic faith, had placed them in the custody of the orphanage, but somewhere communications broke down. I will have to write a letter to the people holding my children informing them that we are the legal parents, and giving them our address and then we will be reunited My wife smiles now, we aie all happy, said Brother Tran Brother Tran, a priest, and Tam Minh Mmer, 19, have both been set apart as stake missionaries, and they are working with the missionaries from Pres Christensens stake The work of Church Social Services is evident, as is the untiring efforts of Sistei Dorothy Hurley, stake Relief Society president, and Albert P Ostraff, high councilor m charge of military affairs for the stake Brother Ostraff is an Institute director. Both Brother Ostraff and Sister Harley have spent part of every day at Camp Pendleton helping their brothers and sisters in need Sister Hurley said there are several garages in the stake still piled high with clothing and other goods for more refugees expected in Sister To Thi Kim Thanh, who gave birth to a girl on Mothers Day morning, received word shat her husband and father were safe in Guam. This made her life complete, said Sister Hurley. Sister Hurley got permission to keep Sister To and her baby in her home Getting permission to have Sister Continued on Page Pres. Christensen The tragic thing is, we have received word fruin the president of the English-speakin- g branch m Thailand that this brothers wife and small child were killed in Cambodia He had been sent to Saigon on detached duty with the Vietnamese air force. His w ife and baby were with him. His wife was about eight months pregnant with the second child and had to return to Cambodia for delivery. "It was about this tune that everything fell to the Communists. The Cambodian brother, who has been in the Church only about two months, was ordered out of Vietnam He couldnt get back to Cambodia, so he was evacuated. We also have confirmation from the mission president in that area confirm Albert P. Ostraff, left; Dorothy Hurley, arid Brshop Victor L. Brown, chat at Pendleton.
