Brother Ludvigson is the leader of the dependent Frednkstad Branch in the Norway Oslo Mission I am happiest when I see the people keep the commandments and do ihe things they are assed We are growing an we have a wonderful sp'nt, he said Students By DAVID JOHNSTON Church News Correspondent EAST LANSING, MICH Construction is under way here on a latter-da- y Saint Living Learning Center for students attending giant Michigan State University Robert Monson, director of the LDS Institute of Religion at MSU, said the twin apartment buildings and a new institute building wdl be ready for use when the fall term begins in September. One apartment building will house 68 men and the other, 68 women, with LDS supervisors in each building and Church conduct and dress standards required for living m the units Brother Monson said that m addition to the many Mormon college students who have made arrangements to live in the units, a large volume of inquiries has been received from members of other churches who are interested because of the conduct and dress standards required ef residents The three buildings are located on a 17-u- ot heavily-woode- d nine-acr- e site that has more than 1,500 feet of frontage on the beautiful Red Cedar River, which winds its way through the campus and town of Eas Lansing The property is directly across the street from MSU, the nations second largest single campus university v,:th moi e than 41,000 students The number of LDS students at tending Michigan State has been growing steadily over the years, Brother Monson said Weve had a full time institute program here for three years g and we hope that th.s center will attract even more Mormon young people here The project, which had been under consideration for several years, will be the first of its kind at a school outside of Utah The late Howard Stoddard Sr , a Church member and leading Michigan banker, ongmally proposed the idea living-learnin- non-Chur- ana since his death, contributions for the project have been coming in Brother Monson said policy in the living units will be set by a board composed of the presidents of the five stakes located in Michigan Each apartment unit will have four structures are residents The 2 being designed so handicapped students can live in the ground floor units The institute building wriil also serve as the meetinghouse of the University Branch of the Lansing Michigan Stake The idea is to have a gathering place for LDS students that will be conducive to LDS standa.ds and close to a university of the caliber of MSU, Brother Monson said He said it is hoped that during summer months some of the apartment units can be used for temporary housing for youth conferences, regional meetings and other Church activities The site has been designed so that tennis courts can be added later A boat house for canoes that can be used on the nver is also planned WEEK ENDING MAY 31. 1975 CHURCH 7 |
