GUNN McKAY Democratic Candidate Bichard Richards Republican Candidate, Congress, 1st District The use Of drugs has become one of our most serious national problems. That proves education can be an effective tool against drug abuse. However, we need an adequate research program to develop sound and indisputable scientific evidence that including marijuana drugs are harmful. this problem doesnt exist And e xclusively in the major population centers of t h e nation. Its destructive ten- tacles are reaching into our homes right here in Utah. A Utah Department of Health Survey shows 9.1 per cent of Utah eighth grade students have tried drugs at least once, 10.5 per cent of the 10th graders and 14.2 per cent of our 12th graders. Last year in Salt Lake City schools, the use e marijuana increased by 5.8 per cent, speed by 4.9 per cent and LSD by 5.7 per cent. Glue sniffing, on the other hand, decreased by 2.4 per rent. This indicates students are turning to more sophisticated drugs. It is imperative our representatives in Congress quit trying to find reasons co justify drug Uoe especially the sale of and dope to our children initiate a sound program to control it. To eliminate the drug menace, I will propose an ac cooperative govemmert-citii.cprogram to achieve three goals. These goals are: Give youth a meaningful alternative tc drugs. that Congress, H District As the campaign comes to a close, I wish to thank the thousands of friends who have encouraged me in my efforts. The importance of educating our youth about the dangers of drug use and abuse can be found in the results of education programs conducted in Ogden and Brigham City. A drug center was established two years ago in Brigham City to acquaint young people with the results of drug use. Mayor Oluf Zun-dand policy officials report drug use by youth has decreased sharply since then. A four-da- y drug Institute was held in Ogden early this year. Drug arrests dropped by 35 per cent in the six months following the institute. el y power-hungr- brings More Value. a home, religious and social climate that four-poi- nt and the politicians in both parties who promote it. Anyway you try to define it, it comes qut slavery. I' have seen and heard things as a candidate for public office that as a citizen I ony suspected.
