When the 1967 basketball season was history, Warren turned full time to his insurance business. He maintained contact with sports, playing on a semi-pr- o basketball team and a conducting television sports show in Tucson. This was the third veek in row for the Falcons and the Rams leading their respective polls (Class AA and Class B), but it is the second week for the Templars, who replaced Cedar City. A Unique Relationship I never wonied about my big men, but now my guards are starting to come around, said Manti mentor Wilbur Braithwaite. We put it all together in one of our better efforts against Juab on a hostile court. Larson is a bishop in the University Branch Ward, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-da- y Saints. Larson is a convert to the Mormon Church Rustand also is a convert to the Mormon Church. He was baptized by Larson. I joined the Mormon Church because of Coach Larsons influence, Kustand said. But neer in the years I placed and coached under him, did he try to impose his religious philosophy on me. Coach Larson influenced me by example. He lives a life of dedication to his players, his profession, his religion and humanity in general. I asked Warren if he thought Larson was going through some especially torturous moments in these times when the Mormon Church is target of attack by black groups for alleged racist policies Pun-the- Some investigation Ilearfield Falcons are rated No. I feel sure he is confronted with inward conflicts that are unique because he is a member of the Mormon Church, Warren said. But Coach Larson has a great awareness of the social problems of all minority groups. He bends over backwards to help all his athletes whether they are black, white or any other color, creed or nationality. A few years back, when a black athlete was dropped from the squad, Coach Larson was charged with being a racist The other black athletes came to his support 100 per cent I think they feel strongly for him as I know he does for them. Coach Larson believes in confronting problems head on. He could recruit away from black athletes if he wanted to take a path which would be of less personal mental anguish to himself. But he believes you cant avoid or solve problems by ignoring them. The issues are there and they must be faced. Coach Larson doesnt hide his head in the sand . . . hoping an awkward situation between he, as a Mormon, and his black athletes will just disappear into thin air. He likes to clear the air. He dislikes hearsay and rumor. He invites sessions where he can tell athletes his position and in turn asks for their honest opinions and reactions. He tries to help athletes to become as knowledgeable as possible about his stand. But he sets up no ha'd, fast rules Respected As An Individual the athletes respect Coach Larson as an individual and a coach . . . which is really his object. He does not belittle or hold prejudices toward religions of any of his athletes. He would like the same feeling of his athletes toward him He thinks the basketball court is not the place to settle religious issues. But he realizes, in this case, religion has been made an issue and that his black athletes are going through a period every bit as difficult as his own thought Coach lairsoii was personally disappointed when the Arizona black athletes and most of the white chose to wear protest wrist bands against 15l'. Like I said before, I am sure Coach Lai son would like to take religious dissention olf the basketball court. 1 am equally sure he would not ti to influence such a decision by reminding the players they were acting against his religion. If he felt disappointed, I am sure it would stem from what such incidents are doing to hurt dis. not because of any personal basketball comfort it caused him. It is apparent more storm clouds will gather this season for Coach Biuce Larson, a Mormon bishop. Already, the Tut eon NAACP and Arizona Black Student Union are influencing Wildcat black athletes towaid boycotting the Feb. 14 BYU game at Provo. . 1 again on the Class AA poll.
