the ladies terii Teril territorial toria torla I 1 centennial eair fair in the old oid constitution Building sand band everything looked as charming fresh and interesting as on the first visit at the point when we left off in the first sketch stands a splendid Eplen did ornament in the shape of imitations of varieties of fruit in wax exquisitely colored by louis davis and close by it beautiful bo bets 1 of wax flowers by mrs birs AW za calder caider and miss julia E davis in commenting on which one ml might deservedly half exhaust the vocabulary of adjectives they are although not in the art department positive specimens of art the trimming flowers from brigham city from mrs ursenbach ward wards mrs hyde of nephi and from the first ward and from others would we should judge pa pass the criticisms of the best connoisseurs in that line being as handsome and as excellently manufactured as need be with such ability in that branch ag as displayed in in those specimens to import such fancy articles to utah is too much like carrying coals to newcastle A great feature of the exhibition esthe is tho silk here youcan you can ean seethe see the whole process of production from the e eggs s to the cocoons and from the jatter latter to the reeled spun and woven and otherwise manufactured article art att lele icle here for instance ia Is a most admirable fichu a species of collar genuine silk lace which judges of the gentle sex assert is not excelled in the world th this isis Is saying much for the skill of mrs ursenbach crompton of morgan city the maker of the article but we must pass on with a mere glance at the floss tassels cassels tas sels handkerchiefs ac of the silken material for time and space will not admit of elaboration but before leaving we may firstly remark that tho the ivl ivi evidences denees dences are strongly in favor of the presumption that kiik klik silk raising and even manufacture will one day become one of the leading indu industries atries and most prolific sources of wealth in utah the statement made by Preside president ut young years ago that this territory wag was not surpassed as a silk raising region ia Is gradually and surely being demonstrated st and we aro are more than pleased leased to observe that t the he ladies are arc almost if not quite the head and front of the movement toward establishing this important industry on the north counter Js Is a very beautiful delicate wax b bouquet minus however the natural eoal cool color of the flowers fl ewers being pure white by mr joseph J daynes there are hanging around in the windows and other places most exquisite looking ornaments called calle d snow baskets ho named probably because of their snowy flaky appearance peara pe arance nce uce they are very attractive it Is not for us to presume to know much about that delicate fabric so much admired by the ladle ladles known as lace but wo know that it is at the fair quite a large amount of it as delicate and ae cunningly and skillfully fully man manufactured u fac as could well be wished for there is a wide variety of specimens in this line and they are from nearly every part of the territory we observed on one of the tables an ornamental bootjack boot jack of neat design which wius was drawn by mrs E davis the articles being met callic was cast by her busand and nicely bronzed and painted b by y the lady named mrs davis is quite artistic in her tastes as will be observed by the mottoes that meet the eye at various points of the main compartments of the fair which were executed and er creditably dit too by her own hand should the reader desire to know something of the formidable and inconceivably varied and complex array of bedspreads from snowy white to the bright and variegated in color of crochet work ornamental needlework patchwork ac they will just have to go there and look around for even an attempt to describe is too extensive a task for us to begin besides there are interspersed among them a great variety of other samples of the handiwork of or the ladies all speaking to their cleverness cle vernese intelligence 0 and good taste talk about utilization why there is scarcely anything but can bo be put to some use here for instance is a veritable cheese box but so metamorphosed sed bed as to be completely beyond recognition for by the ful hands of bf mrs rs croch crocheron eron pron it has L been been leen een transformed by cloth ornamentation and covering into a ladys workbox the ladies ladles of the committee are deserving of great praise for ahe fhe energy and enterprise they hive have five shown in tho th preparation for and the tho arrangement and aud conduct of the fair they are as follows miss E B R snow president miss M E ccok first vice president mrs P al staines second vice president bliss miss 1 A ashby secretary miss hattie hattle woolley assistant secretary miss bliss clarissa young treasurer miss anna wells assistant treasurer misses emma wells minnie home horne and mamie alam I 1 jones there is so much to observe and consequently write about in the fair that for the present we must stop the exhibition is being pretty well patronized and the universal verdict of visitors so far as we have learned is that it is a most attractive place in which to 8 spend e n d an hour or two in viewing aph the e results of the skill intelligence and industry of the ladies ladles of utah specially FROM FRIDAYS DAILY JULY 14 in the tho press mr E W tul ledges new work the life of brigham Bri ghana young or utah and her founders u Is now in the press and aud n d wili will probably be on the market in august the on the order of elder isaac groo groode we shipped today to day to glebe sydney australia a considerable quantity of various publications of the church to be used in that far off portion of the globe for missionary purposes fine stock A splendid specimen of a three year old thorough bred devonshire bull drew an admiring crowd to the deseret bank corner he was a fine animal a model of symmetry and was born on the cars on the way here from canada and is the property of mr H S eldredge sunday excursions at the bishops meeting held last evening bishop edward hunter presiding iding a unanimous vote was passed to the effect that the sense of the meeting was unqualifiedly opposed to sunday excursions and that those present would not only not patronize them but considered it their duty to discountenance them entirely distinguished visitor we were pleased to receive a visit today to day from professor dr H vogel of berlin who ia is on a pleasure tour and arid now on his way to the pacific coast he visited around in the city today to day and expressed himself well pleased with its appearance the professor has a high reputation for scientific and literary attainments he was accompanied to our office by mr G M ottinger to whom he bore a letter ietter of introduction educational last night bur our reporter dropped in into the soth district schoolhouse school house and found bro theo B lewis busily engaged teaching a number of young ladies and gentlemen who are organized into a night school ia in which thirty five have been enrolled with an average attendance of which is very fair for this season of the year the day school of the same district of which bro lewis ia is principal closed today to day for the vacation and will open again on the of august the school is ably conducted and giving general satisfaction military wo we have havo received over the signature of adjutant vm win W mccammon mccammon Cammon regimental and post adjutant quartermaster Ch charies charles arleaH H warrens B R Q BL post Q M A C B S and post treasurer industry genuine industry seldom beldom fails falls to bring a desirable reward this has been exemplified in the ca case ease ae of the owner of a half city olty lot in the ward who for several beveral years has from the products of thail that small smail small parcel of land made for himself and family a respectable spec table living some seasons clearing besides the produce appropriated pro bri a ted for his own c consumption to from that source with then the addition of a number of hives of bees ho he is now enabled to at least double that amount this instance is considerable of a commentary upon numbers of men who own double the amount of land and who lounge around the street corners with their hands in their pockets calling out hard times and no work while their uncultivated ground lies almost totally unused awaiting and inviting the magic hand of industry ready to give a liberal reward for all the labors bestowed if some people instead of everlastingly everlasting y waiting for something to turn up would take the spade and rake and turn up the faithful soil they would be in more reputable business than they are tho ladies territorial centennial lair tair in former allusions to this excellent exhibition we have not spoken of the art department which is in the rear or west room and no person of taste can enter it without admiring the very fine specimens of artistic hair work in the form of wreaths etc one of which particularly neat is by miss julia E davis and there ia is another which is not only remarkable bl e as a work of art but b ut fbi ibi ia specially pec faily lally v valuable on account of or h having vi ngin in it portions pert ions lons of or the hair of the prop prod prophet laet joseph and his hir brother N hyrum rum smith also abo aso of president B young his counsellors Coun and and members of the quorum of the twelve apostles this specimen ia is the handiwork of M mrs r s G M Thom there is a very handsome specimen of what we believe to be called oriental painting rig a white croas cross cro ero is surrounded by and ornamented namen ted with flowers a dark ground throwing the ornamentation out in bold relief this specimen was executed by mr john lenzi lenz who also exhibits a couple of other specimens of his handiwork being the arranging and surrounding by similar orn orr ornamentation in en tation of the portraits of twe twelve ive lve young ladies of utah born in polygamous marriage and another with the portraits of twelve young men also the issue of scriptural wedlock very good looking handsome intelligent tell igent young people more especially of course those of the gentle sex sec misses wallace and goldin golding exhibit some very nice L specimens ns of flowers done dono in wool wooi and here are several specimens of collect collections ioris of genuine flowers press pressed edy edg brought from the holy land and other notable eastern countries by miss eliza B R snow a very valuable collection mr moses jones of the 9 ath th ward has made from wood a watch holder and other articles which are so intricately closely and fully cut as to cause one to wonder how they were made mr dan exhibits portraits of the prophet joseph smith and his br brother 0 ther hyrum and individuals who were personally intimate with those illustrious men say the likenesses are excellent and they are otherwise skillfully painted those portraits alts aits are very suitable for hang hanging ing up in meeting houses or other public halls we noticed a wreath of natural flowers preserved quite a novelty also a bouquet of the same class A very striking portrait of our venerable friend bishop edward H hunter ter ler adorns the walls we think thil thul the likeness likeness good but we did not learn the name of the artist there are splendid specimens of artistic ornamental penmanship by professor monch and mr geo E wallace observe these two specimens of needle work very delicate and very neat a couple of or small landscapes with good per spec tive they were done hy by the hand of the mother of brother william C staines Bt aines many yeara ago sister bister exhibits a very attractive specimen of flowers ia wool none need be without orn brn ornament ornamentation ament with which to adorn the interior of their homes rhomes mrs cutler has demonstrated that such can be had bad if one has no more material than a bunch of wheat straw for she has made from this simple article a number of neat picture frames carte de visite size and from the same 83 me substance combined with some fabrics has also made a handsome basket we do not in these sketches pretend to name more than a very limited proportion of the articles on exhibition and exhibitors will have too much good sense to sup pose i that they or their products pave cave have been slighted in fact there is is scarcely anything but is worthy of note but seeing a full description is impracticable we aim to give a passing sketch coshow to show to the public what is being done by the ladies of the territory and to particularly show what could bo be done were home producing institutions more faithfully encouraged the ability skill and materials being here hero in profusion a fact abundantly demonstrated by the fair pair F FROM royl SATURDAYS DAIL DAILY JULY 1 15 I foul brood we are informed that foul brood is playing considerable havoc among bees whew a bev miles south of this city am
