Show October 17 1975 Page 10 I Show Cult 1 1 in SLC upstages Heep Dharma will be recognized as the man with the stuff the power and the finesse to put an end to Student Life's Beck vs Page vs Clapton vs Ma havishnu John S debate Albert Bouchard's drum solo featuring phase shifting echo and strobe effects while not a technical wonder was certainly entertaining The Cult also showed that the use of such visual effects as the strobe light flashpots and smoke generators which seem to have become trite in these days of the jaded Rock fan ( hear the Carpenters are smashing their instruments now) can be used to stunning effect if employed sparingly and at the right § moments The crowd was on its feet (as opposed to on its j§ knees) for the Cult's opening number Stairway to the §j Stars and the great majority stayed there for the § remainder of the hour and ten minute set which in- - §i eluded "Maserati GTand Bucks Boogie" but despite fj the crowds howling stomping and incendiary display the Cult didn't return for an encore As for Uriah Heep its not that they were bad just a bit upstaged They certainly tried hard enough Frontman and vocalist extraordinaire David Byron pranced and stomped and whirled in accompaniment to his soaring vocals Uriah Heep's vocals were awesome at times the four part harmonies of Byron keyboard man Ken Hensley guitarist Mick Box and new bassist John §j Wetton (ex Roxy Music and King Crimson) floated something from a celestial choir The Heep suffered from a poor choice of material one that lacked the variety they're capable of The § highlights of the show were older numbers such as 1 "Rainbow Demon" "Easy Livin'' "Look At Your- - 1 self" and "Bird Of Prey" The Heep seem to be moving from there mystical majestic sound to a more straight forward less complex one but somehow all those guitar blasts orgen swells and rave up endings started to sound the same Drummer Lee Kerslake has one of the most simplistic styles I've ever heard The Heep returned for one 20 minute encore i By Dave Kingham Uriah Hepp is a flashy English power groop and we all know that when it comes to shear power Rock the English have everyone outclassed right? It seems 8 someone forgot to tell the Blue Oyster Cult The Cult from Long Island stole the show from the Heep Monday night in the Salt Palace in what turned out to be another one of United Concert's infamous disappearing band shows (the third billed group The I Kids formerly the Heavy Metal Kids never 1 materialized) f§ : The Blue Oyster Cult is a guitar band and makes no pretense about it in fact they flaunt it During ME 262 they brought their keyboard man Alan Lanier and drummer Albert Bouchard out front with their Les Pauls for a wailing screaming jam featuring four guitars and a bass The real power behind the Cult is lead guitarist Donald "Buck Dharma" Roeser For years critics have been raving about Buck Dharma's playing (upon the release of their first album Melody Maker called him heavy metal's premier guitarist) Buck Dharma however has seemed content to an almost motionless figure in the background of the Cult's live shows Monday night's concert saw a new Buck Dharma coming out into the spotlight moving with the music and obstehsibly enjoying it He even hammed it up a bit during one of the Cult's live standards "Cities On Flame With Rock And Roll" pausing to leisurely scratch his head while the audience waited on the edge of their seats for the blazing burst they knew was coming Buck's white SG must have scorch marks on § remain I it- - Perhaps with this venture into showmanship Buck I i j i j i Organist gives Th u rsday Recital Dr James M Drake newly appointed organ instructor at USU presented an organ recital Thursday in the Chase Fine Arts Center Dr Drake has studied organ with Dr Robert Rayfield at Indiana University Dr Irene Robertson at the University of Southern California Mrs Ruth Barrus at Ricks College the eminent French-Belgia- n organist Guy Weitz in London and Dr Alexander Schreiner in Salt Lake City Dr Drake has concertized extensively throughout Europe and the US playing in Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris St Paul’s Cathedral in London Kaiser William Memorial Church in West Berlin and St Peter’s in Rome He was the first American to appear on a concert performance in East Germany when he played at the Erfurt Cathedral in Erfurt East Germany He was a finalist in the National Organ Competition in 1969 at Fort Wayne Indiana Dr Drake played a varied program consisting of Weitz’s “Fanfare and Gothic March’’ Mendelssohn’s Sonata No I in F minor Bach’s “Three Chorale Preludes” and “Prelude and Fugue in A minor” Handel’s “Organ Concerto No 5 in F Major” Franck’s “Chorale in B minor” Widor’s “Andante and Vierne’s “First Organ Symphony” Sos-tenut- o” |
