Show October 17 1975 Page ’5 Who cares Dear Editor: Since when did Student Life take over the duties of handling public relations for the Interfraternity council? I mean really who cares about “Sig Derby Days? Like it or not the Greeks on campus are in the vast MINORITY! This being the case I fine it hard to believe they warrant such constant coverage especially when so many other legitimate campus news sources go unheard The article appearing Wednes- day followed more the lines of an advertisement than a news story Discussing Derby Days the article promoted a Sigma Chi sponsored dance such promotion has no place in a news story This is not to say the Greeks should refrain from promoting their activities However when an activity is as “special interest” oriented as a Sigma Chi dance promotion should be paid for in the form of an advertisement It seems only fair After all the Cultural VP pays for advertsing ASUSU sponsored concerts and activities why should a sponsored activity receive free publicity in the ! non-stude- nt paper? While I’m at it aren’t their enough junky signs and posters on campus without adding to the mess with signs like Chi Omega’s say Derby’s off to theSigs!” Like I said before who care? Barry Willis 573-92-47- 51 Untrue Dear Editor: Though I am no longer a student at Utah State University I feel it necessary to respond to the editorial in the Oct 8 issue of Student Life written by Frank Coats Mr Coats states that the trend in student government is to exclude all but the pros and to nurture pseudo junior politicians mimicking their older counterparts Mr Coats also states that there was a time when officiers worked for nothing — officers like Rex Lund Ralph Walker Doug Jensen and myself and that several of these officers whom he had talked to agreed with his point of view First of all to set the record straight we did not work for “nothing” We received tuition waivers fifty dollars a month and free tickets to all concerts and movies and game room privileges as well We were paid quite well for the jobs we did Secondly Mr Coats never talked to me about his editorial nor do I agree with it I took the liberty of contacting Rex Lund Doug Jensen and Ralph Walker and found that of the three Mr Coats talked to only one and that none of the three agreed with what Mr Coats had said in his editorial I resent the implications made and the misinformation given in the editorial and suggest that in the future Mr Coats research his story more thoroughly before he writes it Finally I would like to say that I agree with Mr Coats in one respect That is students should have a greater say about the money that is paid to members of student government but it should be equal to the say they have regarding the salaries and scholarships wfyich are given to Student Life editors and staff Darrell Borrowman Sporting isn't it Dear Editor: As everyone knows the annual slaughter of defenseless animals begins this weekend Everyone and his brother goes out to hunt deer and in the case of hunters from California each other This is a nice culture that we live in that permits the killing of defenseless animals for fun and food How would you like to have your head hanging over someone’s mantle? I hope that while you are out there running around risking heart failure you get your deer and your best friend gets your wife or girl friend Now that I have insulted everyone and made a few enemies I urge everyone to be careful and not shoot first and ask questions later because remember it is better to murder some poor defenseless deer than to shoot at something that can shoot back Wouldn’t that be something to in the hills have a fire-figaround Utah California vs the world! ht Henry Dalton 4 Also we can see that from their response that they are reper-sentin- g us on a higher moral plain than many of us are truly located I feel that this alone is very important for they are the elected leaders that are reflecting us as a studentbody If this is true we must then thank them for keeping our standards up for as it has been shown in the past when your leaders are corrupt and you allowed it to go on without action you to are corrupt It would go then that so are the men we elect then so are the people I have to leave you now for I am late for a paddle ball game with Darrell Reg HOW 600 350 “Yes there exists the possibility of conflict of interest” when in reality it was obviously a conflict of interest? If Buzz Thurber was bringing in concerts to save the student-bod- y money why did he not tell his supervisor Val Christensen about it? The reason is that Dr Christensen would have told him it was a conflict of interest If something is wrong it’s wrong It doesn’t matter whether Richard Chambers Richard Nixon or Buzz Thurber is the one involved Student Life stated that over 2500 people voted for Buzz for an incumbant officer Most of the replies to Student Life interviews state that “he realized he did something wrong and took steps to correct it” I want to know if he realized his wrong and corrected it or if correction was taken after Student Life put pressure on him Incidents like this reduce the credibility of not only Buzz Thurber but the trust we as students put in the Administration Buzz’s office controls the largest chunk of student funds allocated by the Executive Council I believe that Buzz at least owes an explanation and state- ment to the studentbody and administration Ron Godfrey ' 528-74-28- 20 a record in student elections Richard Nixon likewise won by a Onik George McGovern In both cases people voted on past records of honesty and proven performan- and Squealer landslide over his opponent ce are Buzz is nobody’s dummy He was an officer last year and he and good night knows the business To use the Frank Coats excuse of naivity or that he didn’t think it was that bad is not valid Thank-yo- u coming!
