all aspects of their personality while in school “We should have a good academic experience while in school” he said “but it is also important to have a good social experience” He said he would advise all new students to set some goals for what they really want to accomplish while they are in school and knows always has an answer sometimes flippant When asked why he ran for a studentbody office he replied with a poker face “I was crazy” Then he burst out laughing and said ‘‘That’s not true-no- t really” Something to offer said he wanted to be Activities because he felt he something to offer Vice-preside- nt had the students He said that he also knew it would be a good op- portunity for (Continued from page 1) overall goal This' goal is to provide the student with the strongest possible background in the fundamental art areas such as drawing and design The urgency of making the decision to drop a program at this point was increased by the fact that architects are scheduled to begin work on plans for the newk art building in the very near future Hellberg said Koenig said if something did indeed have to be dropped from the department which he didn’t believe was the case there were several other major offerings that didn’t relate to the goal of a strong fundamental traditional background anymore than Interior Design and were less popular Koenig also challenged the validity of the goal itself “Departmental goals should be oriented towards what is best for the students and a program that is strong viable and unique to the state system doesn’t fit that criteria” Koenig said Figures from the past five years show a strong trend of student support for the applied art areas Koenig said “We all recognize the need for the traditional areas to support them but the vast majority of the students in the department are in the applied areas” Koenig said The space problem in the new building isn’t the critical issue Koenig said because the Interior design program is a program with great merit that takes little space “It seems there is a lack of knowledge about our program” Koenig said ‘‘We have the professional expertise to help solve the space problems they are having in the preliminary stages of planning for the new building and we haven’t even been consulted “My goal is to show that the program is so strong viable and unique to the state system that it is vital to this university” Hellberg countered “I could buy it if I wasn’t of support disappear in a few weeks” Hellberg said he felt Koenig’s to appeal and the decisions of (Sffs to support him have a strong emotional base because at the present time there is an overabundance of art instructors in the country making the competition for the few jobs available very stiff and because Koenig had decided to make his home here Koenig said he has had several job offers a year and wouldn’t expect to have trouble getting another job “The reason I’m appealing the decision is because it’s wrong” Koenig said “I feel my program is providing an important service to the student and it’s not fair to the students who have come to USU from all over the country for the program to just drop it” Koenig said the program enjoys the support not only of students both in and out of the department but also the support of a wide cross section of the university faculty and the support of the community that benefits from is services and hires its graduates Val R Christensen assistant dean of students and university center director said Koenig and his classes have been very helpful to him in the designing and remodeling of the Briar the cafeteria the Hobby Center the Sunburst Lounge and on other occasions “I like very much to see that king of service on campus” decision must be dropped from the department after the faculty meeting was that he later learned they were short of funds needed for adequate space in the new building and they could expect to get no additional faculty The reason the decision didn’t go the departmental through curriculum committee was that two of the three members were gone at the time the decision was made he said Hellberg said he has since talked personally to every member of the department including the three members of the committee and the majority of the staff support the decision Koenig also claims to have the support of the majority of the department’s staff since an of- ficial departmental vote has never been taken Koenig said the attrition rate of majors in his program is about average for a professional prgram and that other strong professional program in the department have higher rates “If you offer a fair and challenging program you’re bound to have a high attrition rate” Koenig said “Interior Design deals with the design of the entire space no object of art or otherwise can be veiwed and enjoyed if the total environment itself can’t be enjoyed” Koenig said “There’s a world of things we can learn from each other if we respect one another’s talents” Koenig said that up until now a fine balance had been maintained that the between perience Koenig and Hellberg said the the Educational Policies Committee in the near future Hellberg said he is not sure exactly what action the committee will take on the decision because the university guidelines only state that the forms for dropping a class from the catalogue must go before the committee but don’t state what the committee is supposed to do with them decision will be before differing instructors Now the department’s goal seems to have been changed to one of strengthening the fine arts at the expense of the applied arts regardless of the merit of the program Koenig said One of the key issues here is the establishment of a policy stating An posite of any of the criteria”' Koenig said The lifetime Not only that you get Seated leas fa Lifetime Insurance against loss It pays to have contacts Contacts offer the wearer more freedom and comfort They move then suddenly all the years decided something although the program starts out with 40 majors at the beginning of each year it averaged only six graduates personnel jeopardy The other applied arts such as Textile Design Ceramics and Photography relate more to the department’s goal because they encompass the creation of exhibitable art objects Hellberg said “The other areas all relate to and benefit from each other” Hellberg said “Interior Design benefits from the fundamental art areas but these areas don’t benefit from Interior Design” Hellberg said the reason he -- Bill is friendly alot of
