Show t September 26 1973 Page 2 editorial comment i Brain stortage little over a year ago the American people were concerned with the Viet Nam war inflation the upcoming national elections and other such paltry issues Now their attention has been drawn to a much more shortages! overriding concern At the eve of 1972 a terrible term the “energy crisis” began to be uttered by American lips Then the morning of 1973 brought a barrage of “shortages” we hardly knew how to cope with them There was a gasoline shortage a natural gas shortage a fuel oil shortage an electricity shortage a meat shortage a wheat shortage an animal feeds shortage (which caused a shortage of chicken turkey and eggs) an antifreeze shortage a canning jar shortage and a toilet shortage Whew! We were suddenly changed from affluent America to pathetic America For the first time we entertained the thought that some day our once unlimited resources would come to an end A rash of hoarding began where consumers would buy up vast amounts of commodities such as beef to carry them through when the supply ran out Now beef is plentiful the prices are dropping and their beef bought at fairly high prices sits rankling in their deep freezes It seems waste like this and a lot of panic could be prevented if temporary setbacks in supply were labelled correctly instead of calling them “shortages” It is partly the fault of the press “Shortage” is a nice easy word to work with and it connotes a bit of trauma so it is thrown hastily into the story We think the press has suffered a temporary “shortage” of imagination A versatile mix of jazz and rock will echo through A Utah State’s Spectrum on Oct 5 at 8 pm when Chicago formerly Chicago Transit Authority returns to Utah To call Chicago’s music a combination of rock and jazz and leave it like that would be an insult Unlike many of the groups that produce musical fads (ie Bobby Fisher and the chessmen Sam Ervin and Watergate unlimited) etc only to disappear faster than they arrived Chicago has been around for a long time and shows no sign of fading Originally Chicago formed 3s a sort of revolutionary bar and dance band When Chicago migrated from the windy city to Los Angeles their reputation for big band impact and small band intimacy traveled with them Believing that creative development is the nature of all music Chicago set out and accomplished a musical mish-mas- h of classical jazz and rock elements Chicago seeks to accomplish more than the synthesis of styles Rather the band fuses its influences together into a symbiotic relationship (well anyway that’s what the press release said! ) In other words Chicago flows The backgrounds of each of the seven members of Chicago have influenced all the others creating a rare musical interaction James Pankow for example trombone player was schooled in the classics then developed an interest in jazz that led him to the big bands and finally through experience to rock Brent Harker Editor Robert Lamm brought to (keyboards-vocals- ) Chicago the grandeur and grace that he developed while singing in a church choir Getting his musical start in an Irish Show Band trumpet player Lee Loughnane has d contributed a feeling of simplicity to the group Walt Parazaider studied iazz and classical clarinet and helped develop Chicago’s musical freedom : light-hearte- Peter Cetera bass player-vocalibegan rock as did the groups drummer Daniel Seraphine st The diverse musical backgrounds of the group members and the fusing of their different ideas and styles has made Chicago the success that it is With six popular albums released and hundreds of successful concerts in the past Chicago is a musical idea that continues to work Brent Harker Pat Berardy Managing Editor Editor-in-chi- ef Chris Larsen News Editor Steve Snow Business Manager STUDCNT UFf h tto ffkial - —1 - r Susan Arrington Opinions Editor ’Tmtiroucr rk — teMr mvtt k Ml Randy Hendricks Writer Nmm f USU mmj U witffeM a A tot 40-ipa- at H ‘Hmili lit MMw totw Editorial offtcm UnJVmity Contar H hi k-- WW- Slot Uaivny 4 to —Mr— n—C ca by bN— ea — WIN— Ken Pasarella Sports Editor Sandy Rose Editorial Assistant iwc Utk ntl' U” - t tea TS SIS tnninm oU "W JmvmI Irigiia 5 9 |
