was always on hand to cover valley sporting events Then two years ago he was sturck by a mysterious neurological disease for which no cure is known At first it was diagnosed as minor tension and not thought to be serious But last February when taking clothes out of the dryer Kurt noticed that he was having trouble just lifting four shirts One day in March he found himself using his right hand to hold his watch as he checked the time At that point he became “quite concerned” Kurt decided to consult a new physician in town about his problem The doctor immediately sent him to the Utah Medical center In July he entered the Center for tests By this time he was suffering from further lack of strength and had dropped from his characteristic weight of 155 pounds to 130 He now weighs 88 pounds Kurt still had strength left in his right arm and legs so he fought on to remain active in his job as sports editor Finally only weeks ago the d determination disease had progressed so far that despite he had to step down “Whether I ever get better or not “m a better person because of what people have done for me” Kurt said “I have learned more respect more true love because I have been able to see the goodness in man I have seen how much people give pf themselves for others If I do get better people won’t know me because1 I know now what’s im- portant and what a person ought to be “I hope I do get better because I would like the chance to repay an awful lot of people an awful lot of kindness I can’t repay the people who helped me but I can help someone else to make their burden a little bit lighter That’s how I would repay my debt” Having participated in sports as an athlete and having covered them as a journalist Kurt Me Gregor knows that the mark of a truly great athlete is his refusal to quite — to fight on for victory until the very end no matter what the odds are or no matter how far you are behind Kurt was honored last night not merely for the great service he has
