Utah now residing in Smith-fiel- d was a graduate of USU in 1949 with a Bachelor of Science degree in English and a Secondary Teaching Credential He went on to receive his JS in speech and dramatics from USU in 1955 and completed his in education with an EdD Educational Administration in Student government He worked in the field of education from 1949 until 1967 serving in such capacities as teacher principal superintendent and professor until he became acting dean of the College of Education in 1967 here at USU He is also currently completing his term as Mayor of Smithfield an office he has held since 1966 Dean Ballam’s main duty is to serve as the chairman of the Council on Teacher Education which is a university-wid- e committee “This committee is concerned with teacher preparation on a ’ level” stated campus-wid- e Ballam “It develops or approves teacher education curricula ©mxsifte Gvoews-'b©k§ft®p- establishes admission and certification policies and works generally to improve teacher education programs campus- e wide” the profit from the bookstore by Nancy Neerken Senior Writer “I have no objections to changing the bookstore system” Dean Haslam explained manager of the USU Bookstore Wednesday at the ASUSU Executive Senate meeting Haslam commented that the USU Bookstore is University owned and operated and that all profits go into student functions mainly to pay off building con- tracts According to Haslam most of comes from items other than textbooks and the management is attempting to operate as as economically possible The bookstore off ical also indicated that a high turnover rate and the cost of training personnel was the main causes for lack of student employment The major conflict in providing lower bookstore prices seems to be the need for to a defendant is that when he pleads guilty he saves the government time and money he said “Mr Hunt has pleaded guilty to three felonies subject to a maximum prison sentence of 25 years” Silbert in asked about teacher the dif- ficulties of conforming to the new quota system being imposed on teacher certification Dean Ballam expressed an optimistic viewpoint with the thought that such a selection and training process will provide increased opportunities and better selection of capable students along with the certification and production y of teachers In the future Dean Ballam is working on developing a concept throughout the College of Education which entails moving away from the sole acquisition of knowledge to the application of this knowledge in a learningteaching situtation “Competency in subject matter is essential however but we are trying to move toward how to apply this mastery to the skill of teaching” said Ballam “Students are not certified high-qualit- on accumulation of credit hours but on how well they entirely can apply this to teaching in the classroom” Dean Ballam “students suggests investigate that very thoroughly with their advisors the positions open to them in teaching before deciding not to enroll in a teacher preparation program There is still ample opportunity for the capable student in this field compared with other fields” He
