"It would provide recreation but it would mess up the magnificent mountain Should a massive power plant be built? It would provide needed electric energy for the expanding industries of the region and it would create 17000 jobs but the plant would ugly the landscape" Kilpatrick viewed these questions as reaching far beyond Cache Valley They were part of a greater fundamental question that will "occupy the whole world over the next century" That question he writes is "What is the price that must be paid to preserve a livable planet?" Astonishing as it may sound Kilpatrick thought Gary Snyder the environmental philospher was the "only speaker who tackled the question squarely" Kilpatrick noted that "Snyder pressed — students to challenge the whole American idea of 'growth " In conclusion Kilpatrick noted that "the jet plane is a value So was the buffalo a value We have filled our bellies which is good and fouled our rivers which is bad "What values truly matter? And how do we keep these values secure?" Most of those in attendance will probably agree that these questions were not answered completely to anyone's satisfaction But while final answers were not and could not be expected to be forthcoming in a three hour exercise one value is certain — the developmental value of having such brilliant minds as Kilpatrick and Snyder on the same program together Dean In the October r r i Sanlto Writon nowt editor: Brant Harfcar anviranmanl ad: SCI Davit art editor: Callao Kfcy toff oditor: Pat ieraidy photo oditor: Tam CatwoB attl: TooyCaOt Richard d L Webb Hh 1972 "The College Placement Council has reported that hiring of graduates Is up this year the first increase noted in the past three years In 782 employers surveyed hiring of graduates with bachelor's degrees was up 4 per cent master's up 13 per cent and Phds up 25 per cent "Bachelor's level business students fared best with a 9 per cent increase science and math grads Went up 4 per cent while engineering graduates stayed at about the same as last year However master's level engineering graduates went up 33 per cent and at the doctoral level engineering graduates gained by 36 percent" Yes opportunities are there In checking this data with the USU" Placement Director the information above was cerified and the BS degree candidates did better in engineering Andfion photo the traffic for their continued department practice of the art of “hin- Engineering Education Newsbrief on page 6 this article on job opportunities was published ditar Barry Wlttt managing dtor f One more time I congratulate 'Engineering Senator editor f Editor Student Life: Engineer hiring on the rise- - Doug Anderson international d: Sandhi Limthongkal ntertainmont id: Jody Bumott pJnbM editor Loci THomat PorH editor: Mica Patchen Jitor: Winona Bowen editorial aett: Jedeane Albright Sharon Grotto Parking dsightedness” This time the rear view comet u lie piutBLttog'imr in me iorm 01 the mooue decal upflttmrttai health by requiring us to rent initiated Fall Quarter in another suits I can only suggest that he attempt to upgrade toe parking provide reasonable justification situation on campus As with all “hind-efforts- ” for this claim the traffic sold the decal department without bothering to consult those As I recall there are several large pools in Utah with heavy who must bear the burden of their use that seemingly meet State efforts The mobile decal was abolished regulations without this suit rental ea the U of U pool the Oct 24 1972 after a number of Logan City Municipal pool toe complaints from staff members Lagoon pool (which has “water fit to drink”) Certainly there are Dorothy McCarty more efficient means of Research Technician protecting us than requiring a Department of Agricultural suit rental Has he ever' conand Irrigation Engineering sidered requiring all swimmers to refrain from opening their a Involvement mouths while in toe pool?
