Utah institutions Although his major contributions to education have been in the fields of the social sciences and the humanities his rural upbringing has given him a vital interest in matters pertaining to rural development and scientific R MERRILL Academic vice president Dr Milton R Merrill is an active administrator at USU and in of Logan He has his home-tow- n been closely affiliated with the University since receiving his master of arts and doctor of philosophy degrees at Columbia University Dr Merrill received his bachelor of science degree at USU and returned to serve in such positions as Director of the Force College of Army-Ai- r Training Program Assistant to the President Head of the Department of History and Political Science and Dean of the College of Business and Social Sciences Throughout the United Stales he is recognized for his academic prowess and is the only Utahn ever to be named to membership of the Executive CounPolitical cil of the American Science Association on which he served for three years Recently Governor Calvin L Ramp-to- n appointed him to membersteering comship on a mittee assigned to prepare a master plan for the higher education system of Utah Dr Merrill has two sons: Richard a Rhodes Scholar and presently with a law firm in WashC D and Stephen ington studying at Oriel College Oxford England ag- riculture He pursues farming and ranching as an avocation President Chase received his Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Utah then went on for his M A and PhD degrees at the University of California and the University of Chicago His doctoral dissertation is a study of early communal societies in the United States Recently President Chase was awarded the Order of the Crown by the Shah of Iran he has actively represented USU in the Western Hemisphere Europe and the Middle East Through special programs and a sincere interest in the young people of other lands he has welcomed students from many foreign lands Administration Department Dean Collier received his bachelor of arts in political science at Reed College Portland Oregon and was awarded his PhD in Economies at Stanford University Before joining the has been Acting Head of the Department of Zoology at USU D WYNNE THORNE D Wynne Thome Director of the Agricultural Experiment Station at USU has been affiliated with the University since 1939 During that time he has been teaching doing research and experimental woik and administrating the Experimental Station After graduating from Utah State in 1933 Director Thorne went to Iowa Slate University
