Poynter Fait Lake Tribune, Sunday, February 9, 19 In Fight Oil E( ;onomy Honey production in Utah year totaled 1,050 000 pounds, according to the Utah Crop and Livestock Reporting Service. The crop was less than half the 1967 production and was the lowest In recent years, the last service reported. Poor condition of bees at the start of the season, a cool wet spring and a series of killing frosts were named for the dropping yie from 44 pounds to 21 pounds. Particularly damaging was the widespread frost on June 30 and 31 which affected Millard County, where many of the states hives are located. 1941. 1 He served first at Camp Roberson, Aik., then was assigned to Fort Warren, Wyo.. where he was retained after giaduating fiom Officer Candidate School. A member of the quartermaster corps, he was discharged in December 1945 with the rank of captain. Family Moves to Arizona During this period he had married Virginia Lee of Columbia, Mo., and In time the couple had wo children. Their oldest, Richard, Is now a senior at University of Arizona. Their daughter Susan Is a freshman at the same university. About 17 years ago their son developed bronchial problems and it was recommended the family move to the warm, dry climate of Arizona. Mr. Poynter served with several banks, including the Saguaro Bank in Tempe, which he helped organize. This bank merged with three others to create the United Bank of Arizona, a $100 million institution. Mr. Poynter was with United for only a month before he accepted an offer to join Tracy Collins as executive vice president. He assumed leadership of the bank in January this year, after being with the institution about 13 months. Utah is somewhat of a change for the banker. In booming Arizona the growth rate is extremely vigorous and somewhat chaotic. Tempe, where I was located, was the fastest growing area in what we called the Valley of the Sun. Fast growth is the kind of problem you like to deal with, he says. S.L.s Charming, Needs Tourists Stocks of honey on hand for sale were only 304,000 pounds on Dec. 15, about one third the volume of a year earlier, the service reported. He serves as treasurer of the recently formed Utah Business Development Corp. (Gene Donovan is president), which seeks to do just that. For recreation, he likes to do a lot of reading, both works on banking, management and finance, and the latest novels. Poynter, president, Tracy Collins Bank & Trust. As for Salt Lake City, Mr. Poynter believes the city has which we noted the first time we got off the plane at the airport. It has a beautiful natural setting. Utah needs to piomote tourism because we have a beautiful state with lots to offer," Mr. Poynter says. He also thinks electronics is a natural growth industry for the area. Arizona promoted itself by advertising its climate and by building up the idea that Arizona is one of the last frontiers, where everybody can come and stake a claim worth a million dollars. For the current quarter, 57 percent expected prices to 2 percent said no rise; only one percent change; thought a decline was possible. The survey was taken before the election. Same businessmen may have changed their minds. But this is not yet evident in price behavior or inventory trends. Throughout 1968, inventories rose steadily. This was okay so long as sales were rising fast. Stocks on shelves or wholesale! s manufacturers, and retailers dropped from the 1966 high of nearly 1.6 months supply to close to 1.5 months. But a reversal has taken place. Its possible that stockpiling Is persisting after demand has slackened. A slide nas taken place in retail sales (seasonally adjusted). Here are the figures: Month Retail Sales $28 million July 29.04 million August 28.86 million September 28.71 million October 28.78 million November 28.03 million December To be sure, retail sales are still six percent above a year ago. But sales plans were even greater. Orders were placed and pipelines are being filled accordingly. Inference; Inventories will balloon, unless sales turn up. But businessmen are haunted.
