From this incurable strangeness stems our uneurablc insecurity, our unfulfillable craving for roots, or passion to cover the planet with manmade compounds. It has always seemed to me that only animals and plants feel wholly at home in this world, and that our human uniqueness is diminished the moment we fit in perfectly anywhere on earth and feel that we truly belong. I like to play with the fancy that some contagion from outer space has been the seed of man. Our passionate preoccupation with heaven, the stars, and a (Pal somewhere in outer space is a homing impulse. We are drawn back to w'here we came from. Hence to me the exploration of space has an inner logic. It also tickles me no end that the astronauts are not Jite conscious intellectuals, but lowbrow, ordinary Americans. It has been the genius of the average American to achieve the momentous in an unmomentous, matter-of-fac- t way. If space exploration remains in their keeping they will soon make of it an everyday routine accessible to all. The intellectuals call this giving of access to the vulgar vulgarization. What Goethe said of the Germans holds true of intellectuals in general: their Finally I found it wonderfully fitting that while they circled the moon the astronauts read aloud from the first chapter of Genesis. Some hysterical women of both sexes found the reading improper. But I remembered a favorite passage in Benjamin Franklins autobiography: The people have a saying that God Almighty is Himself a mechanic, the greatest in the universe; and he is respected and admired more for the variety of His handiwork than for the antiquity of his family. God is the archetypal innovator and creator. Any time we try the untried, turn a dream into reality, overcome insurmountable obstacles we are in some manner sharing Gods style. Why should not the astronauts think of Him who numbered the stars and called them by name, and meted out the heaven with the We have it from Einstein that span. to rethink what he wanted most was Gods thoughts and know how God created the world. The typical call comes late at night to a woman and may bpgin with heavy breathing or a suggestive, Hello, honey. The caller then lets loose with a volley of obscenities or erotic suggestions. All authorities agree that the smart woman should immediately hang up. Dr. John Donnelly, ef psychia-trist-in-ehi- at Hartford's In- stitute of Living, a private mental hospital, feels that "the woman who reacts is more likely to get another call. By George Getze Los AngelfS Times Writer safer than ones of Very tall LOS ANGELES actually may be earthquakes than buildings safer in shorter ones, according to G. W. Houxner, professor of civil engineering at California Institute of Technology. noted Housner Dr. San Francisco already has buildings of 50 stories and more and Los ha e. soon will Angeles ?Q stories or less. For this reason such tall buildings are being very care-lullstudied by computers that figure out how they will vibrate in earthquakes and what forces will Ire exerted on y First, the building code requirements for skyscrapers are more stingent than for other buildings. Second, skyscrapers are given special engineering attention just because they are tall. Third, and most important, there is a natural law that tends to make them safer. Wind Resistance must be deBuildings signed to resist wind of intensities in the specified building codes. Dr. Housner The maximum wind says. forces is directly in proportion to a building's height, or the whereas area, expoed maximum earthquake force is only approximately in proportion to the square root of the height. Because of this, at a certain height, the wind force; becomes greater than force. For mot buildings, this range. in tire . "It follows that skyscrapers designed to resist wind forces will be relatively safe in the ' event of an earthquake safer, in fact, than buildings of 20 stories or less, he said. Dr. Housner said it ; has been estimated that 75 million people have been killed bv quakes in the last 4,000 years. their structural parts.
