(Rodale $1495): An “Dried fruit is delicious eaten right out of your hand or plumped up with extra water and added to baked goods But most fruit also needs some form of pretreatment to maintain top quality once dried “Commercially some fruit is pretreated with sulfur to preserve its color but sulfur can add a sour or acid taste and some people are allergic to sulfur It also takes special equipment and isn’t convenient to do at home “A healthy and easy alternative that will keep apples and bananas from browning and peaches from discoloring is to dip them in an agent such as ascorbic add powder (available in season at most grocery stores or through your local drugstore) lemon or apple juice or honey solutions" Sandarp-Examn- AN I LA -- There are two kinds of fish in the world - big fish and everything else Utah's version of the big fish is the lake trout also known as the Mackinaw trout or simply the Mack They’re in a few lakes in the state - Fish Lake Bear Lake - but the home of the really big lake trout is Flaming Gorge Reservoir in the northeastern comer of the state It would be nice to say anyone could run cut to Flaming Gorge and start catching lake trout right and left Not so Catching lake trout with any regularity is a mix of and knowledge high-tec- h diligence It is not a thing that can be learned over a holiday weekend or even a season of fishing “These guys who spend 50 days a year on the water they probably know more about lake trout than I do" said Roger Schneidervin longtime wildlife biologist at the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources Flaming Gorge Project Thai's a lot of time and few people are willing or able to spend that much tune on the water Dale Rounklcs the classified advertising manager at is one of the Standard-Examina handful who can deliver on a promise to put fish in the boat But it's taken time He’s been at it for countless hours over a dozen years studying the fish and their habits experimenting with different tactics and tackle Nearly everything on the boat - downriggers fish finder global positioning system - tics into the pursuit of lake trout He's been quite successful His biggest lake trout caught earlier this summer weighed in at almost 46 pounds tantalizingly close to the lake record of 51 pounds 8 ounces er 27-fo- ot The secret lure swan me to secrecy so I will not a his reveal all of his tactics secret hire I will say the tactics are mostly common sense and it’s a fairly common lure available at most tackle shops although folks wouldn't associate it with lake trout fishing One of the first things he said to my son when we got on the boat was "If anybody asks what you're catching fish with tell them ‘Rapalas’ " We were not fishing with Rapalas Rounkles said other anglers often follow him around for hours sometimes using binoculars to try and figure out what lure he's using He hides his lure from sight mostly because he wants to keep the secret but partly because it's kind of fun to frustrate these curious folks Although the lure is important it's not critical to achieving success Other hires such as broken-bac- k Rapalas various flatfish spoons and jigs also work and Rounkles said he'll switch over to sane of them at certain times of the year When the fish are feeding more aggressively fa example he might tie on a Rapala Fishing ft depfts What we’re looking fa today are the big fish that lurk near the bottom of the lake When they’re low they're usually feeding So we have to get the lures down deep right on the fish’s nose When you're using light line and Rounkles uses only monofilament you have to use a downrigger to get the line that deep Downriggers use a heavy lead ball attached to a reel with a steel cable The fishing line is attached to a release on the ball and when the ball is raised or lowered the lure goes with it So we’re patrolling over a likely spot one that Rounkles has caught many a fish on The bottom of the lice is uneven ranging from 70 to 120 feet deep Potatoes rooted in Always buy certified seed potatoes from nursery or garden center 2000 years ago in America the Incas started cultivating varieties of wild potatoes In the mid-150potatoes were introduced to Europe Ireland was the first country to embrace them They are often referred to as “Irish potatoes" because the Irish quickly adopted them as a food essential They were a well-knostaple by the time European explorers came to America Potatoes were to America in the early 1 700s by Irish settlers It is interesting that potatoes had to move from South America to Europe before coming to North America I guess our trade problems aren’t anything new The potato famines of Ireland in the 1840s were caused by a late blight fungus The disease was found in Ireland in 1820 but did not cause any serious damage until 1840 Because the people had no fungicides and the fungus had no natural enemies in Ireland late blight destroyed over 900000 acres of potatoes As a result nearly half of the population of Ireland died from starvation and another million moved from the country to other lands seeking food This brought many Irish settlers to America I have some Irish blood in my family line I somehow believe that my ancestors were back in Ireland analyzing the disease identifying it and probably blaming it on the weather Oh well I’m thankful for Irish forefathers Potatoes are the most popular vegetable grown in America today Their production in the small home garden has decreased because they are so inexpensive and readily available in stores Potatoes start from another potato The “eyes" on the tuber are actually buds or nodes The potato itself is a stem and thus has the ability to sprout and start a new plant Because of the size of the tuber the potato has a large energy reserve and the sprouts can grow several feet before they ever need sunlight for energy Plant half a tuber 6 to 8 inches most deep about mid-Apr- il years After the plant has emerged and starts to grow add another I to 2 indies of soil onto the plant for better tuber formation Always buy certified seed potatoes from the local 0s a nursery garden center Potatoes from the grocery Jerry Goodspeed with the most rudimentary of equipment 7 Fishermen who know the water well catch good fish from open boats and simple spinning ngs You can catch lake trout ' slow still fishing with jigs trolling with steel line You just catch more of them with high-tec- h gear and you catch them more regularly Of our six lake trout five were under 10 pounds and one 1 weighed in at around 15 pounds Nothing phenomenal but certainly much better than the guy who we’d happened across at the boat ramp ‘Tve been fishing for lake trout and haven’t caught one yet” he complained to Dale “What are you fishing with?" Trolling speed is important too Early in the year when the fish are sluggish it's usually more productive to troll very slowly maybe as slow as 1 mph As the fish get more active and aggressive the speed should increase This trip we're poking along at about 2 mph The color of the lure is important The clarity of the lake water varies at different times of the year and although the fish may not be keying directly on a certain cola combination they often seem to be much more interested in some color schemes than others Rounkles said That means the angler should 14-fo- ot a -- experiment Rounkles is telling me all this while we're waiting for action but suddenly here’s the first strike only about 15 minutes into our first run Rounklcs hands the rod to my son and tells him what to do: “Let it run let it take out - "Rapalas" 80lh Birthday fe Nonna Grie Rohmer line” He and I crank up the two downriggers and bnng in the line from the other rod He kills the trolling motor and we dnft in 4ft Ward Aug 1 0 0 ft 115 We Strma urn tom Aiqriut silence while the fish is being played "Take it easy” Rounkles said “It’s only test so you can't pull too hard" X mm rtotoi Ami 4475 Sou If ff Haroid Xekmet am August Jl IX She t W Tkn Saa Mi 4 Vtow amd 1 kart tort six-pou- High School a rich long history About The fish is coming in fairly easily giving up more line than it’s taking back out over the lightly set drag so we know fc's not a monster of the deep Bath's still bigger than anything Conor’s ever caught After about 10 minutes the fish is played out and Dale leans over to land ft ' About 8 pounds Big grin on the kid Dale and I snap off a few pictures then he rigs the rods and downriggers again We’ll-- " repeat this sequence half a dozen times over the weekend bringing ’ a total of six lake trout to the 1 hours of lake boat in about eight trout fishing We released all but one of them To spice things up we caught a dozen or so kokanee salmon and a single rainbow' First I must say Rounkles has s6 er The thrill of victory So when he volunteered to take me and my son fishing for lake trout 1 found the time STUDENTS Wo contract with afl High Schools on a vocational study program Develop a profession in Cosmetology while gong to school CAURANDEE www swervseouf 394-571- There will be n open house hononng Al ICt HOLBROOK RAMrTPN on her With birthdj Nituidav Augmt 1st 1 WK at I’M in the Blufl RoaJ 11 -3 J Chimh Relief Society Room 2500 South Bluff Road 8 a cov STACEY’S I HANDS OF CHAMPIONS BEAUTY COLLEGE e Notnr Mali! store or last year's crop on Alice Is a daughter of Syracuse ptenen heritage and a member of the Utah Daughters of Pxmeen She h a long time resident ol the city of Syracuse and I member of the newly organized Syracuse UtS Cntennia DirtWatd !
