Henrietta Douglass Henrietta Douglass was pleasantly surprised on her 85th birthday by a group of relatives and friends. What she thought was to be a quiet dinner with a niece turned out ot be a fam-io- y gathering at the Third Ward Boy Scout banquet. The event was planned by three nieces; Mrs. A.B. Chapman, Littleton, Colorado (unable to attend); Mrs. Russell Hutchinson, Salem; Mrs. C.E. Stevenson, Payson. Following the dinner, a group of thirteen met at the old Douglass home on north Main Street for birthday cake and ice cream. Thoe attending beside the guest of honor and her nieces were: Mr. and Mrs. Don Zeeman and children, Clinton, Christi, and Leanne; Val and Jan Hutchinson; Douglass Stevenson, Ethel Hiatt, and Jean Lundholm, who was also celebrating her birth- which she made the year before. Being an avid reader, she keeps up with current events, and visits places through her many periodicals.' She enjoys good health and still maintains her home doing her own housekeeping and taking care of her personal needs with no regular help; though, Ive slowed down some, she says. Henrietta was born February 5, 1886 in the house where she resides today, the seventh child in a family of eleven, and the daughter of Samuel and Emma Jane Dixon Douglass. She received her early education in many of the one room school houses in Payson, one being the old rock school. Later she attended the Central School and Peteetneet for high school. Ruth Rothe By I recently heard the short story The Necklace by Guy de Maupassant reviewed once again and even though it was written almost one hundred years ago it still has a message for us in 1971. The main character in the story, Mathilde, spends her whole life being unhappy, resentful, and daydreaming of luxury and gaiety. She never did learn a basic fact of the happy life, to face life in a realistic manner and to make the most of it. Often in our lives we could self-pityi- ng become discouraged because we dont have the wealth, health, good looks, high intelligence or opportunities that someone else has. Sometimes we dont especially like the occupation or the house we live in or in some cases folks may not even like our peaceful little valley as a place to live. Probably no one in life is perfectly satisfied with everything in their lives, but it all depends upon our own attitude wnether we make the best of things as they are and go on to make them better. I have know ladies who didnt care for their house wtien they first moved in to it. Instead of sitting down and feeling sorry for themselves they started to look at it carefully and to see in what ways they could change them for the better. They, in most cases couldnt just start tearing out walls, windows and doors and putting in new ones , Hazel P. They knew that it would take work, money and careul planning if they were going to reach their goal but their attitude of hope and optimism about the whole thing made the other family members enthusiastic too and through their united effort the project was completed much sooner than the mother thought it could be done. If you are inclined to be dissatisfied with your husbands income you can make the whole family dissatisfied with it too and though he m3y be doing his best with chance of improving as the years go by you can make him feel defeated and discouraged.
