Show 4 THE PAYSON CHRONICLE PAYSON Thursday, February 11, 1971 Corner Young Homemaker Mrs. David (Judith Wood) Mitchell was chosen Utahs Young Homemaker of the Year 1971. She was a candidate of. the local chapter of the Young Homemakers and was in competition with representatives of other chapters throughout Mr. and Mrs. Donald Mel Thatcher (Emma Virginia Walker) Reception honors couple A lovely wedding reception held February 5 in the Spring Lake Ward Cultural Hall for Emma Virginia Walker and Donald Mel Thatcher. Standing in line before a lovely red and white backdrop were the parents, Mr. and Mrs. Chesley P. Walker and Mr. and Mrs. William Thatcher. Best men were Gary and Richard was told Marriage Mrs. recent marriage of Arlene Stewart, Payson, and James McCune, Nephi, is being announced to friends in the area. The couple exchanged nuptial vows at Provo in the presence of members of their families. Several social events have been given in their honor. The McCunes are residing in Spanish Fork. The Thatcher, groom. brothers of the Attending the bride were Mrs. Jean Park, sister of the bride; Miss Sherie Brereton, Mrs. Douglas Stillman, sister to the groom; Mrs. Gary Thatcher and s. Mrs. Richard Thatcher, The flower girl was four year old niece of the bride and daughter of Mrs. Jean Park. The wedding cake was beautifully decorated in white with red roses and silver leaves with a silver backing. Serving tables were decorated with and red and white flowers and hearts. Carin Smith sat at the guest book table which was also decorated with cupids and red flowers. Lighted flower pots guided guests to the church. The couple were married January 25. The presentation was made by Mrs. Calvin Rampton, wife of Governor Rampton, at the' third session of the Young Homemakers Convention held at the Ramada Inn in Salt Lake City. She was judged. for her talent in church and community activities and as she stated in a personal interview with the Press: We were judged mostly on our ability as a homemaker. Judith W. Mitchell was born in Lake Shore, Utah to Mr. and Mrs. Ferris Wood. She attended school in Benjamin, LakeShore and Spanish Fork, graduating from the Spanish Fork High School and Seminary. She is married to David Frost Mitchell and they reside at 126 ' West 300 North in Spanish Fork. They are the parents of seven children: Ruth 12, Mary Ann 11; . Daniel 10, Michael David Elizabeth 6, Rebecca 3 and Rachel seven months. Judi, as she is affectionally known, receives our sincere congratulations. We are proud to acknowledge you as Utahs Young Homemaker of the Year. Mrs. Ruth Rothe With Valentines Day on Sun- day most homemakers try ta' cook something a little special for the occasion. If you dont have a family favorite to rely upon or any ideas, perhaps you can make a heart shaped cake using the following recipe. In case you are rushed you can use packaged mixes. If you dont have heart-shappans just make the regular round layers and put them together with icing then cut a pie shaped wedge from side about 3 12 inches wide by 3 deep. Put this wedge at opposite side of cake to make point of heart, then frost, top and sides of cake. For added holiday touch decorate with heart design of cinnamon candies or other red decoration in center and cover rest of cake with ed coconut. Dickey of Payson wish to announce the engagement and forthcoming marriage of their daughter, Sherryl Louise, to Mr. Lynn Joseph Fowers, son of Mr. and Sherryl is a 1970 graduate of Payson High School and Pay-so- n LDS Seminary. She is presently employed at the House of Originals and is Vice President of Affiliate Seven in the Mrs. Joseph F. Fowers, Orem. Utah Hairdressers and Cosme- tologists Association. Lynn is a 1969 graduate of Orem High School and Orem LDS Seminary. He was Vice President of Orem High School sister-in-law- FFA. The marriage will be solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple. A reception will be held on February 12, at the Nebo Stake Center. All friends and relatives are cordially invited to attend. cu-pi- ds Jr. Auxiliary Junior Girls of the Payson American Legion Auxiliary met Saturday forenoon at the Legion Hall, with Linda Allen presiding. The colors were posted by Bonne Dixon and Janet Wilson. The girls made Valentine favors which were later presented to the local hospital patients. They discussed a fund raising project and also heard a discussion of a foreign country, Panama, a facet of their outlined program. Colors were retired by Janet Wilson and Lori Buys. Admitted to the Auxiliary were Mrs. Ella Stevens, Mrs. Laura Steele and Mrs. Una Payne. New members of the Junior Girls are Terry Llewellyn, Janice Wilson, Bonne Dixon, Tressa Nelson, Connie Mad-so- n, Joy Argyle, Karen Bearn-so- n, Terry Wilcock and Tamara Wilcox. Topic for the evening was patriotism; American the Beautiful. Prof. Melville spoke on the importance of becoming involved in public affairs. He urged the ladies to attend mass meetings to help select candidates for election to office, then noted various other ways that women can be useful citizens in promoting better ways of creating a better world. He also pointed out that Utah has scenic areas which should be made available to the public, particularly mentioned the Great Salt Lake, where there is no vantage viewpoint where it may be seen from designated places along the highways. The speaker was introduced by Mrs. Mattinson. Business matters were discussed under direction of Mrs. Duane Patten, president. Mrs. Shirley Wilson read the collect. Refreshments in a Valentine theme were served to 23, including Prof, and Mrs. MelviUe. COOKS GOOD Named as Utah State Doris Jensen, chaplain. Announcement was made of a class on personal defense sponsored by the auxiliary for any woman or girl high school age or over. The first class was given on Feb. 10 with Mack Holley, Utah County Deputy Sheriff and Reid Rpdmail giving hints and instructions on means to be used in protection from attackers. There will be no charge for the classes and everyone is invited. Time: 8 p.m. Mrs. Madson also read a Pledge of Allegiance given by Red Skelton on his TV program some time ago. In it each line is explained to make the pledge more meaningful to those who repeat it. The pledge is printed elsewhere in this paper. Refreshments were served by Lucille Allen, c h a i r m a m; Mary Jeppson, Bliss King, Ella Hill, Blanche Heath, Kathleen Finch, Venna Simmons, Effie Miller and Hazel Wignall. Cultus club Mrs. Maxine White reviewed the novel, Christie, by Kathryn Marshall, at a meeting of the Cultus Club, held Wednesday afternoon at the home of Mrs. Stanley Wilson. Reciting from memory, Mrs. W'hite ably told the story of a young school teacher who went into the Smokey Mountains of Tennessee to reside in the small village, Cutters Gap, where she learned to understand and to love the plain mountain folk. The book was named best seller for the year 1968. Mrs. White was introduced by Mrs. Mary Jeppson, program chairman. She also presented young Wynn White, who played a violin solo. Mrs. Reed Money, president, conducted the meeting. The pledge was led by Mrs. J.D. Christensen and the collect was given by Mrs. Jim Durrant. Refreshments were served by Mrs. Wilson assisted by Mrs. Earl Page. 1 mx powder tsp. salt 12 1 1 2 cup shortening cup less 2 tbs. milk 12 tsps vanilla Kathy Leigh Hall eggs, beaten Sift first 4 ingredients into mixing bowl. Drop in shortening. Add 23 of milk, then vanilla and beat 2 min on mixer at low speed. Scrape bowl. Add eggs and remaining milk and beat 2 min more. Pour into two greased pans. Bake in 350 oven for 20-min. QUICK FROSTING Combine 1 cup sugar, dash of salt, 14 tsp. cream of tartar and 13 cup water. Bring to boil and stir and cook until sugar is dissolved. Place two egg whites in small bowl of electric mixer. Pour boiling syrup in a thin stream over unbeaten egg whites, beating at high speed 30 until frosting is of spreading consisiency. Add 1 tsp. vanilla and few drops of red coloring (if desired). Spread on cooled cake. 4-- H News BUSY BAKERS The Busy Bakers H Club was held at the home of their leader, Verna Van Ausdal, last Thursday, Feb. 4, 1971. Prayer was by Liz7ie Long. Pledge of Allegiance by Tam my Penrod and the pledge by Verna VanAusdal. The girls spent their time cooking a tasty casserole. They also did some experimental cooking. Closing prayer was given by Pam Nelson. 4-- 4-- H Lizzie Long, Reporter Engagement & wedding Kathy Leigh Hall and Michael Lynn Harris will be married in the Salt Lake Temple February 12 and will be feted at a reception by the brides parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert C. Hall at their home at 614 West 40 North Orem, Utah from 8:00 until 10:00 p.m. Just Woman Talk by June Dickey Beauty has become a national symbol for everyone. We hear at community meetings that we need to beautify our surroundings, we sing There is Beauty All Around, everyone is beauty conscious. The National Fashion Council is helping with this beauty craze with the new hair styles they present each year to the public. Beauty is my line and my interest. You can paint up and fix up and da all thats possible to improve your physical appearance but you must have beauty of soul and character as well to be a truly beautiful individual. Hall is a graduate of Orem High School and the LDS Seminary and was a high school cheerleader. She was a member of the Honor Cotillion of Orem High School. Kathy studied at the BYU and then graduated from the Utah Technical College. She is now employed at the Utah Valley Hospital in Provo. The bridegroom, Michael L. Harris, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gene Phillips of Evanston, Wyoming is a graduate of Payson High School and the LDS Seminary. He served in the U.S. Army for one year in Vietnam. Upon his return from the army Mike went on an LDS mission to Guatamala, El Salvador for two years. He returned in December and is now employed at the Community Press in Provo. The young couple plan to live in Orem, Best man at the wedding will be Mikes older brother, Mr. Russell Harris. beautiful human being he or she was. I had just such an experience last week when a fellow who had become disfigured because of an accident, had risen above his physical appearance to let his light so shine before the world, that to be around him, was to feel beauty, see beauty and think lovely and beautiful thoughts. May your life be one filled with beauty every day. |
