Each one of us contribute to our share of the sewing and each of us has others we trust do sewing for us when extra help is needed. As the business grew, Colleen felt the need to keep better records and after talking it over, she began keeping the books, buying the materials, and most of the business end. The other gals didnt want any part of it, she continues, so it worked out well. As for my contribution, say Colleen, I designed the carrier cover and the Luv wrapper. I feel a great sense of accomplishment just knowing I can do something Ive always grandson is the only one to have a We complete set of simply never have time to sew for our own families. Gayle states that the business though exciting and challenging can also be a headache. I could spend all of my waking hours sewing, doing needle work or crafts of some kind. I love to create new and exciting things, fabrics excite me and I can spend hours looking at patterns and materials. I am what you would call a I go to many of the better department stores, look at the dresses, then come home and make one, often needing no pattern at all. Its exciting to see some mother using one of our carrier covers or diaper bags. One of my sons worked at a grocery store and taking groceries out to a customers car, saw carrier covers and happily informed the lady that his mom made them. Gayle created the diaper bag. Drafting the pattern and making the first one took all of one day and was discouraging. She can now, however, produce one in an hour, and lays claim to having made well over two hundred of them. According to Gayle, All of my family have been very supportive about our business. It is fun to work at something that excites your husband and children as much as it does Luv-A-Kin- One cannot measure friendship It grows inch by inch, yard by yard, and can be sew rew arding ' These words are echoed by four ladies, Frances Mitchner, Linda Pugmire, Gayle Thomas, and Colleen Zohell, who have joined together to form a company by the name of Luv-Kins They are an unlikely four to get together, yet each one has a unique talent she contributes to their business The name of the products, indicates how they feel about children They make baby quilts, crib covers, diaper bags, diaper Luv wrappers, Luv stackers, pats, carrier covers and changing-tablpads. The idea began with Frances. She is the mother of five, Granny-Franni- e to eight grandchildren and says the idea originated because of a lesson given in Relief Society. The lesson encouraged women to develop any artistic abilities they possess The catalystic words were, Do the thing you want to do now! Don't put it otf -- dont delay - fill the need and desires you have within you According to Frances, The lesson didnt mean the same to everyone, thank heavens! If it had, wed have thirty-fiv- e new companies organized When the lesson was over, Linda Pugmire told me she had also been motivated and mentioned how much e she NOT TOO LATE FOR CHRISTMAS DELIVERY of om b'M'ilituI cbilitn-- n s co'or poil'.iils KinDERPOTO INTERNATIONAL. Their vcnluie is two years old and the sales go up every month. They all agree that, Its fun because we know we have top quality products and we never hesitate to show' them to people. We use only top quality material because baby articles not only have to be cute, pretty, but they have to be completely washable. too." So the company started with twelve yards of yellow gingham. Oh, that seemed like a lot, Frances recalls, hut now we buy full bolts of material and lots of batting Gayle and Linda have designed a simple pattern and number system they hope to patent. She loves to paint, sketch, and draw and in this business she has used that talent along with her love of sewing. It is a challenge to come up with the designs, tells Linda. To draw five balloons is a lot different than turning a 45 by 45 quilt under a machine needle and duplicate those same simple circles. The designs must be unique, attractive, and at the same time, simple enough to do the applique work and have it coine out neat and top quality, she states. Norfolk. DELI 17th So. My family puts up with a you. enjoys sewing childrens clothing, especially little girls dresses. This started me thinking! " Frances has always had the urge to do something, and even before she is finished with her first project, she has ideas for several more She says. I love people, so it seemed natural to think of a business. I also knew what an excellent seamstress and creative person Gayle Thomas is. If you even suggest an idea to her, she is at your door with the finished item within hours. She was excited over the idea, too. The next thing, however, was to find someone to be the brains of the organization Colleen Zobells name came to mind because she had experience in the fabric business and would know quality fabrics. She is also an excellent seamstress Colleen too, was elated with the idea of a business. Colleen knows how to keep records and we trusted her to laughs Frances. "She was the logical choice. Collecting taxes would be a new thing tor us but Colleen has kept us on the right track and been the ideal addition to our group. Each one of these friends had felt a desire to "some day realize their creative dreams and felt this would be a good working combination Not one of us," they laugh, was smart enough to be afraid and we jumped in. dreamed 1 |
