Smith Honored At Eightieth Birthday Celebration w ii m Shirley Black Marries Mark Oberg In Temple Rifes November 20 was the date chosen by Mark E Oberg and Shirley Black to be united in marriage in the Salt Lake LDS Temple A wedding breakfast was given for the couple by the Mertice E. Smith will be honored by her friends and family at an open house on December 7 in honor of her 80th birthday. Smith Mertice at age 18 Mrs. Smith was born on December Homersville, Georgia, the daughter of James William and Cor-en- a Daugherty. Martice married Layton U. Smith on December 21, 1933 in Jacksonville, 7, 1900 in - Florida. Their marriage was solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple in June, 1948. W'hen she was a small child, she moved with her family from Georgia to Florida After meeting and marrying her husband they moved to California in 1957 and then to Utah when he retired in 1961. She presently resides in West Valley City. Mrs. Smith has been actively involved in genealogical research for the past 35 years and has also been a visiting teacher. Besides her daughter Shearer (Mrs. Max D.) Holman, Mertice has four grandchildren. They are Mark, Cynthia, Elana and April Holman. The Utah Peace Officers Association Auxiliary Board of Directors are donating their first Christmas tree to the Festival of Trees to be held at the Salt Palace on December 3rd through the 6th. A fund raising bazaar was held in October to raise money for the project with part of the funds being used for the tree. Among the ornaments painted by the auxiliary members for the tree are little pigs, facsimiles of badges and offices of the different law enforcement agencies in Utah, regulatory signs and cop cars. Mr. and Mrs. Pig will be underneath the Christmas tree, making one realize that there can be A Peaceful Christmas Through law which is the theme Enforcement, used for the Canadian pine. Proceeds from the sale of the tree will be donated to the Primary Childrens Hospital.
