Mutual Coals And Ambitions Reason For Fifty Years Of Happiness For Sorensons The Great Depression was the background for the courtship and marriage of Ernest and Irene Sorenson of Magna, who will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary Saturday at an Open House between the hours of 5 and 8 p m in the Magna Senior Citizens Center, 8952 West 2700 South They grew up in southern Utah . and he in Levan and she in Nephi their life streams came together in junior high school in 1925 During the next few years they were caught up m a variety of extra curricular activities at Nephi high where both were active in school affairs Ernest found self expression m band and orchestra at the school But at night he took on the appearance of a suave Lothario with a mustache who was part of The Black Pirates dance band which was reputed to play the hottest jazz dark-haire- d this side of Dixie. Clad in colorful pirate garb, Ernest blew a mean trumpet to such tunes as Aint Misbehaving, Bye, Bye Black Bird, and Cuddle Up a Little Closer And according to Irene, You couldnt help but dance to that music It was a time when you went to the dance with one boy, but you changed partners and danced cheek to cheek, and we danced all over Sanpete County In the meantime pretty blonde Irene Downs was busy being part of the school pep club as well as varsity cheerleader But her greatest fulfillment came through playing the lead in the schools opera presentations After five years of dating the couple decided to pull in double harness and they were married October 18, 1930 in the living room of her parents home by an LDS bishop In addition to Edward and Gwen Downs, and Peter and Florence Sorensen, there was a whole house full of friends and relatives to witness the joining of two lives Irene wore a black crepe dress with red satin lining that was made by her grandmother for her junior prom, and Ernest stood up in a plain dress suit ... the only one he had ever had and the only one he would have for a long time to come While most brides put their dresses to rest in layers of white tissue paper in the bottom of their hope chest, Irene was not allowed that luxury For times were hard and wages low and the dress became her best dress which was worn until it was threadbare For a time the young Sorensons lived in Levan where they farmed But the lure of more money and better housing attracted them to the Utah Copper Concentrators and they settled in Garfield in 1935 A cut in the work force compelled the Sorensons to return to Nephi where Ernest worked as manager of a large dairy farm, and by the time he came back Utah Copper had become Kennecott Copper He retired m 1971 as a supervisor of operations at the Magna Mill after 30 years of service In the meantime Irene was busy raising three children, and although she no longer sang and Ernest no longer played the trumpet, their love of music had been passed on to their children Ruth played the snare drums m the Magna-Garfiel- d Drum Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Sorenson . and Granger.
