A statewide program designed to teach safety and riding skills to Utahs growing number of motorcyclists is scheduled to get under way later in the summer at the University of Utah. The project will be directed by Dr. Bryan Smith and Dr. Patty Reagan, associate and assistant professor of health, respectively. Goal of the program is to reduce motorcycle accidents, which have more than doubled nationwide over the last decade. The State Division of Highway Safety is funding the program, with some assistance coming from the Motorcycle Safety Foundation. Dr. Smith said the number of motorbikes registered in Utah bet- Snake Bite climbed 170 percent ween 1969 and 79 to a total of 52,360. Eight fatalities in each of the past three months in the state have accentuated the need for the safety and skills instruction program, he - Victims Urged asserted. To Heed Advice LAKE. SALT With recreational activity in wilder- mountain and ness areas at its peak during the summer months, medical officials have pointed out steps which should be taken in the event of rattlesnake bites. Whenever you hear a rattlesnake, the best thing you can possibly do after locating the snake is move in the opsaid posite direction, Dr. Robert A. Campbell, director of the LDS hospital emergency center. Its much smarter to be safe than curious in this instance. Rattlesnake bites can cause serious illness and even death, Dr. Campbell explained. If the snake is large and the victim small, the chance of the victim dying Increases significantly, it was noted. Danger also rises when prompt medical attention is not received following a bite, center officials warned. Since rattlesnake bites usually occur in remote areas that are the favorite of many hikers, andboaters, other out- campers door enthusiasts, experts have advised that several steps be taken in the event of an encounter with a rattlesnake. If the threatened individual is able, he or she should kill the snake and keep it until reaching a hospital, where a physician can examine the reptile, Dr. Campbell said. If bitten, the victim should lie down and remain as calm as possible. That will slow the victims circulatory system and, thus, the circulation of the snake venom, it was pointed out. If a snake bite kit is available, the enclosed razor should be used to make two longitudinal cuts directly on the fang marks. One should never make crossed incisions, since such a practice could easily destroy nerves, tendons and arteries, Dr. Campbell said. The two cuts should be about a half inch long and a quarter of an inch deep. Suction should then be applied with the kit suction bulb. If the victim doesnt have a suction bulb, its safe to use the mouth since any swallowed snake venom will be neutralized by the stomachs gastric acid, he added. The victim should refrain from walking long distances if possible, but if it cant be helped, should hurry without getting excited, Dr. Campbell advised. A slightly snug tourniquet can be placed immediately above the fang marks if the bite is located on an extremity. The tourniquet should be loosened for a couple of minutes, every 20 minutes, and then reattached an inch higher each time. The practice of pack- ing the bitten extremity in ice is not considered a safe one. For every 10,000 motorbikes in the U. S., the foundation projects that 333 will be involved in an accident this year. The foundation also notes registered that in 1978, one-thir- d fatalities involved in the 16-2- 0 age group.
