Do you believe that children or teenagers who break the law get off too easily? Or are they punished too severely by the Juvenile Court? Do you fear that nothing can be done to stop the trend of increasing juvenile crime statistics? The Second District Juvenile Courts Probation Division believes it has a solution to dealing with young offenders, and it works. For the first half of 1977, 74 percent of 795 youths who were on probation did not have any further referrals to the Court In 1976, 531 youths in the Salt Lake Valley ended their probation successfully. The program responsible for these statistics is known as encouraging Probation the Neighborhood Program. There are six probation located centers strategically throughout the Salt Lake valley. When a youth is found to be in violation of the law, out of his parents control or habitually truant from school, he may be placed on probation and assigned to a particular probation unit near his home. The team of counselors at the probation unit evaluates the needs of the youth and his parents and devises a treatment program specifically for them The youth may be seen weekly in individual counseling, or with his parents in family counseling He may participate in groups with his peers, or recreation activities which reinforce school attendance or some other improved behavior. Other services available at the probation units include parent workshops, crisis intervention, probationers from the Granger Unit returned over $2,400 to their victims What makes a program such as this work7 Its the people. First, it is the staff who are willing and able to provide each family with a program tailored to their individual needs. Second, its the funding and support from Youth Inc., the organization created solely for this purpose. And finally, it is interested citizens who supplement the services e staff. These provided by the citizens are the volunteers who spend time with the young people in a number of different ways. They play a key role in the services offered. And of course, there are never enough volunteers to go around. If you are interested in learning more about the volunteer program at the Juvenile Court contact Nancy Hogarty at Remember the old saying, if you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem. A good program needs good people to keep it going pre- employment guidance, remedial school programs and tutoring services. Oftentimes, a youth has caused damage or loss to his victim in the community. In such cases, the judge may order that the victim be reimbursed. To insure that victims receive restitution, the Court, through the financial support of Youth Inc., has created a restitution fund. In 1976, probationers worked over 3,000 hours to pay back victims and fines. This means that $16,314 00 were returned to victims in the community. The Granger Probation Unit is the office which provides services to youths and families of the Granger, Hunter and Magna areas. Each month, 80 to 100 youths and their families receive services from this probation unit. In 1976, 18 youths from Magna and 47 from the surrounding area successfully completed their probation program.
