Other American circuses came into being during the first half of the 19th Century, and the L.B. Lent Circus, which flourished during and following the Civil War, was the first to use rail transportation. In 1869, W. C. Coup organized a circus so large that its performance had to be given in two rings, and in 1881 Coup, Dan Costello (another showman), Fhin-eT. Bamum, and James T. Largest of these amusement places was the Circus Maximus, 2,000 feet long, and seating 200,000 people. It was here that Pompey the Great, in 55 B. C., sponsored five uninterrupted days of circus games, in which 500 lions and 20 elephants, as well as scores of humans, lost their lives. For centuries thereafter, there was nothing that we would call Circus. Tiny wandering of entertaines troupes played in European market places or at the courts of royalty. Both Meldoyland and Circle Star Theatres bear a remarkable resemblance to the permanent circus buildings in Paris, London, Munich, and other great cities!
