Anything suppose that ever since language was invented people have had trouble understanding each other. The reasons for this have been varied. A word that means one thing to one person might mean something to another. For instance a bag of groceries might be considered heavy and a dirigible might be considered light. O bag of groceries is heavy because we are carrying it some distance but a dirigible is" called light because we usually compare it with an airplane.' When you' tell your son to come home early he might come home at 4 A.M., with the excuse that he thought you meant early in the morning. This whole problem of not understanding comes under the general heading of Semantics. I am convinced that the biggest reason we do not understand each other is simply because we dont listen. Or perhaps I should say that we listen but we dont hear. If we are in the middle of a discussion and the other fellow has the floor, we look like were listening but actually we are thinking of what were going to say the minute we get a chance to speak. If you dont believe it, heres a way to prove it. Get a group of three or four people together and pick a subject. The subject could be anything from international politics to the space race to the price of bananas in Ecuador.
