Show 3 THE OGDEN STANDARD-EXAMINE- LEAGUE WILL Marsh Notes Improved Crops For 1935 In Three Counties HOLD JACKSON DAY He Praises Farmers For Fine Grades Of Produce SEED IMPROVED Pest Control Work Brings Splendid Results A v X A marked improvement in fruits vegetables seeds livestock in Dis 2 embracing Weber Morand North Davis counties is gan noted by LeRoy Marsh district ag ricultural inspector who today is sued his annual report for 1935 In submitting the report to the Board of County Commissioners Inspector Marsh points out: "It is a pleasure to report that there is a general advancement in this work and a fine spirit of from all agencies contacted by the inspector FAKMEKS COMPLIMENTED "In the matter of Federal Ship ping point inspection work on our g farm products the farmers must be complimented on the fine grades of produce offered for sale After all the final analysis of the situation depends upon the quality of produce shipped abroad and this work rests upon the grow er to a great extent "The development of better seed better cultural methods have advanced greatly during the past trict No out-goin- " "Close between the county agent and the inspector has produced splendid results in the past control work "The markets truck inspections and so forth have been carried on with a view of having on sale in Ogden a class of produce that will not only conform with the State Department of Agriculture regulations but shall act as an advertisement medium as well "I also appreciate greatly the fine assistance of your Honorable commission which has a' all times given this office your hearty sup port" The report follows: MARKET INSPECTION In the extensive work of market inspections one thousand eight hundred and sixty visits were made to produce markets grocery stores and so forth where farm products were being handled The general nature of this- work is to keep a close check to insure the public that the quality of produce is up to the standard required by the State Department of Agriculture To see that-al- l marking or brand-in- s' remiirpmpnts nr rnrrvrt nn f closed containers as to variety grade and weight as well as to see that only clean containers are - used Another feature of this work is for the prevention of deceptive pack which by the way in the past has often times been 'one of the bad features in the sale of many farm products What is meant by a deceptive pack is where the top of baskets of fruit or the sacks a nice appearance because the best specimens are placed there while the body or the bottom of the container is packed with low grade or inferior stuff The proper weight of all closed containers must also be checked from time to time to insure the public getting in volume what they pay for The enforcement of the regulation concerning the distribution of ininsects also i comes in for jurious r l tareiui inspection Decause it is I through the distribution nf manv farm products that injurious pests and diseases are spread Since the law forbids the sale of tainted or decayed food of any kind the inspection service must also take this into consideration in their rounds Irkaddition to the market inspections over three hundred trucks were inspected for the same purpose as markets and stores and in addition to this since practically all states demand of Utah a state certificate pertaining to the alfalfa weevil quarantine regulations pracoutside tically all trucks going of the state were inspected and certificates- issued to meet these regulations where required CAIi LOT INSPECTION There was a total of four hundred and fifty-on- e cars of farm produce Inspected under the joint Federal-Stat- e shipping point regulation These cars consisted of cherries apricots peaches onions fresh tomatoes potatoes and apples There was also approximately thirty cars of dressed turkeys inspected All cars of fruit and produce were sent out under Federal-Stat- e certificate grading U S No 1 as to the size quality and condition While practically all of the turkey cars graded U S Prime These certificates are prima fad evi- ' : - agriculture To carry out this large volume of inspection service it required the use of twenty-tw- o regular inspectors and one supervisor ion eradication of this weed PEST CONTROL work has been carried on with the of the county agent This work in eluded timing of the codling moth weed eradication tomato fruit worm experiments as well as other mis cellaneous features of the pest con All pest control trol ARSENICAL RESIDUE The enforcement of the regula tions for the removal of arsenical spray residue on various kinds of fruit was conducted by the federal and state agricultural inspection service The enforcement of the regulation of the removal of poison from fruit has greatly advanced dur ing the past season in fact there is very little fruit to be seen on the market that does not conform to the requirements of the regulations The growers must be com pi i mented for the splendid part that they in general played this season All are agreed that the treatment of the fruit in a bath of hydro chloric acid diluted in water to the proper strength and then carefully washed in clean water is the most practical and successful method for this work The Utah state highway patrol with their checking stations has greatly assisted the department in its various lines of inspection of produce entering the state Certifi cates for grade quality condition as well as meeting in general the re quirements of our quarantine regu lations must be shown at the check ing station NURSERY STOCK All nursery stock entering the district was carefully inspected dur ing the past year This includes trees shrubs vines plants cuttings and so forth The regulation requires that all nursery stock must bear a proper certificate from the point of origin In the case of several kinds of nursery stock Utah refuses entery to a steam rolled feed mill where under seventy oounds of of steam the-grawas rolled hence me germination of the seed was entirely destroyed In another instance ten sacks of alfalfa screenings containing nn proximately 25 per cent white top were found by the inspector about to De piancea on one of the best farms in Weber county This was seized ana the germination com pletely destroyed by putting it through what is known as a "ham mer mill" which "reduced it to the condition or fine flour EVERY SAFEGUARD The placing of every safeguard arouna iarm seeds of any kind can not be stressed too heavilv Proper inquiries as to the origin into the state under any considera oi various seeds and due considera tion in the germination thereof of ten times pays a planter large dividends No grass seeds esneclallv Rhnnid be planted without a sample has Deen su omitted to the state seed for analysis to be sure laboratory — —— r in 1 1220 Friers asKea ramer no!" laughed Lucy "She tried and tried and tried but she couldn't cure him of the habit of scratching his head when he was thinking and she knew it would make him bald some day and she hates bald headed men" "Oh ©ate) — j McNaught Syndi- -
