Show I 1 to owners of animals UN 1 I 1 when almost every grown up person in this y V territory has and necessarily will continue to 1 have so much valuable property at stake in ani it i trials mals it is really surprising that there should be 1 r occasion for such a scene as we witnessed re I 1 i I 1 I 1 bently and as similar scenes may continue to 1 f occur unless ss cattle owners and dealers alter 1 AD p their present course we feel obliged V to venture of a few suggestions that may save time trouble r expense and loss of animals until a more thoro I 1 practice can be had bad on more fully cully developed laws id 4 J on the subject 1 birol 1 I 1 last week a large herd of cattle from the west side of jordan crossed the river near the new ne I 1 bridge passed the north western part of t this city on their way to california and camped wi just north of our city boundary that evening hi t and the next morning a few interested per sons and a few officers in compliance with their 1 t f duties under the mark and brand brana law lav visited ilk the herd and even with their limited knowledge i db it tie of the cattle and under under the requirements of the aid I 1 giue above ve law the officers were compelled in I 1 the k 0 o i line ot of their duty to drive above thirty head of wil g i cattle to the stray pound in this city to be re tain d until persons living in different directions 0 bk F and from one to fifty miles distant could be no i tidied and appear to test the right of ownership now you can readily understand i that this opera 1 j tion was expensive and disagreeable to the ly id i owners of the herd and to the persons summon ij ed at short notice from their labors afar off and 4 for very unpleasant to the officers well what was d i to i the trouble in the first place the herd owners the g had two or three cattle in their herd when they enar t camped whick which upon enquiry they did not pre pile i tend to own and readily turned out that ended ions gm that much did it not no not under the yge a i herd bill passed last winter and printed in vol P in n 4 no 4 of the news for by trial those cattle should have been turned out atit of the herd at ton y once or placed in the first cattle enclosure ow y ho which they came to ac which was not done of y but as they weri were persons wintering here en route for california and not presumed to be as familiar with our laws as our citizens are or I 1 alek should be that point was easily and satisfactory del i I 1 ly jy arranged and this item was all we heard them blamed with and in this their course hardly to ey reaches a bla point as their herd was very large some 5 or head and they ha had d I 1 yo I 1 not passed any cattle yard that was was sufficient to ro to enable them to separate their cattle from others how about the rest of the cattle driven back d 04 I 1 upon minute and careful enquiry the herd own 1 ers era substantiated a fair and honorable possession sion of the animals they claimed but they had not 0 I 1 purchased many cattle that had recorded brands berv and those who sold to them had failed to reverse fide n I 1 their brand hence all this trouble and expense expense to F in those who sold without reve ne two al 1 1 or three days detention of persons who had pur bif I 1 I 1 chased in good faith ato I 1 to prevent the recurrence of like trouble I 1 in future we quote a part of see sec 8 of an act in ob of r relation elation to marks and brands viz it shall W be the duty of every person selling or disposing of to of any animal having a recorded brand to reverse I 1 the ohp same on said animal see sec 14 of IYO i said act reads any officer or individual violating 1011 any provisions of this act shall ahall be liable 0 so to a penalty of not less than one dollar nor ex ceelina one thousand dollars at the discretion 10 J of f the court having jurisdiction of course it is 0 t 00 obvious that the law places all the loss damage ac that way may arise from a recorded brand not af pf io heing being reve reversed ased at sale or dispo disposal ial upon the seller dioio who fails to reverse and all interested will ill 00 do well to act in accor accordance darice with thelah the law on op so tins this point I 1 furthermore 4 as the brand law can only protect of W and require officers to look after after animals with recorded brait brands dw it will be good policy for ow 01 every owner of an animal to call ori on the brand recorder ar or auxillia ry recorder recorder I 1 in his county I 1 choose I 1 his mark get his brand made and forth I 1 with use it As large herds herds are arenow now going out and Jarge large herds heads will soon so oki bi be e passing 0 from the east you will be constantly liable to lose your jour stock uns unless you are much more careful I 1 than ithan you hay have been and may spend weeks ind and months hunting after them when ahen they are off in some herd for california I 1 also herdsmen should shoula bf beyn b ai tone a little m more ore aati active ve and diligent jil igent in looking after after stock put in th air care and not be so unwise to use no harsher term as to receive pay for duties they do not hardly pretend to per perform forT thereby musing causing much loss of stock and time spent in hunting banting them if any circumstance should transpire in cattle trades which would make it very inconvenient or expensive to reverse a brand it answer answer for the present to furnish the buyer a certificate of sale certified to by any justice of the peace ja judge dge or notary public easiest of access and state in the certificate some good reason for not reversing the brand |
