Show from the st louis lonis A mountain of marble RusT RUSHVILLE IVILLE ILL dec 8 1849 I 1 EDITORS I 1 send you yon the following subject to your hiir own goed w it I 1 and I 1 leasure in the premise rebii the fact t to 0 which I 1 would call the attention of f dwir readers is iho ifie existence pe a mountain of marblean war mar blew blein the gi gibat eat sit S it lake valley situated on or near the road leadin from said lake to the anle sec t tion ton of the foit hall road at steeple rocks rock I 1 faid by gefen re fenin hiir to ii it made in in 1849 that it is some t five anve miles this chiq side of said tion and rock to the left or soul h of the oad load i as lit it then ran abut about two ani es and the waters of a creek known in the bolmon guide as white flint I 1 creek and immediately chete said creek brakes from the mountains it is a small and beautiful moun mount ian lian stream which is soon lost in the sandy plain wo into wh ch cb it runs course from south to north at this point there is a mountain of 0 marble of al mot eve y color and shade in stabs slabs of very large lare area and of from an i inch in thickness to blocks of tin mense s size i ze myself and mr simon doyle of this county hut now in california on thoth the ath of august 1849 1840 amused bur ourselves selves for on nn hour or two in in examining this wid and in loosing from this mountain slabs of this thin beautiful marble some and of as fine tex ture lure as is any ny that italy can at afford ford some was black some gray some greenish and of almost every hu hn the mountain is high and long but we only examined it some half mile and cannot say how extensive it is i but from all ail appearance it gitig is inexhaustible there is a dogtown just before reaching the creek and I 1 made the point spoken of because of ascending said creek for blackberries I 1 have seen no person except the rushville train of 1849 that have ever seen it in these railroad times such a point might be of importance under such contingencies most respectfully yours J D MANLOVE |
