Judges at 'the Utah State Fair this year awarded twelve first, second and third place prizes to these children for their handicraft in the field of fundamental design work, hand-loo- m weaving, wheel weaving, leather tools and leather craft, spool knitting, akin g, embroidery, b e I Chinese papei.folding, and the dressing WHILE PRLZES Were won only in these field& the chit.; dren are proficient at many other crafts, for they do other types of weaving, clay modeling shell craft, and crochet. Approximately 30 of the present 34 patients participate, and average about two hours e.day in this occupation. If they are able, they go to the playroom, and if they must remain in bed the supervisors help them there. Each child attempts to complete two articlesone for himself and one for the hospital. The latter are placed on sale for a two-fo- ld purpose. Tbe returns are for partial payment on the materials used by the "children, thus teaching them appreciation of values. They. are also made to feel that they have learned a craft which can assist them in earning their own money. At present Purchasers in- - '4...'! Plans for the new hospital include special showroom where all articles made by the children will be placed for display and . sale. AMONG THE items made a're .coin purses, key rings, scarves, pot holders, hot pads,, belts, embroidered piece a, ceramics, doll clothes, chiltren's purses, novelty favors, and shell craft including barrettes, side combs ear rings, brooches, and place cards. On Richard Ballantyne's birthday, August 26, a beautiful Sunday School parade was conducted in Salt Lake City, with President Smith and many of the General Authorities and civic leaders featured on the program which was conducted at the site of the monument where Elder Ballantyne's first PPg! m711 ,: . li Sunday School met. The BalInntyne family held a large reunion with many of its mem- bers coming from many distant states to attend. The event was also marked by the publication of a biography of the Sunday School founder entitled, "Knight of the Kingdom," by his grandson, Elder Conway B. Sonne. THROUGHOUT THE TEAR Sunday School enlistment of- ficers have worked diligently toward the goal of 500,000 active members. Actually the various rolls 'of the Sunday School include the entire membership of the Church, Elder Folland said, and consequently this figure is over the million mark. ARTS Record Photographer Visits Library VISITING IN THE Genealogical offices and library this week was Jessie H. Lindsey who has microfilmed records and accomplished genealogical research from the eastern seaboard of the United States to the Hawaiian Islands, her present home. Beginning in 1937 4be microfilmed records throughout the New England States, New York state, where she copied 37,000 pages on one assign, ment alone, and in Washington, D. C. She has microfilmed all the temple records of the Hawaiian Temple from the time of its dedication in 1919 through 1942. Since 1945 and her discharge from the U. S. Army, she has been employed by the Bureau of Vital Statistics for the Territory of Hawaii. In this position she is able to gather information and assist many Hawaiian Latter-da- y Saints with their genealogical research. Sunday School Sets Goal WITH ONLY 80,724 new members needed to reach their membership goal, the Deseret Sunday School Union anticipates having a half million members by the end. of the year, Elder Richard E. Po Hand, executive secretary, said this week. "That is, if every superintendency and enlistment officer does his part," he added. Beginning a century ago with one Sunday School, one teacher its founder, Itichard Ba Ilantyne, and 30 students, the largest Mall the Church auxiliaries bad grOwn in 99 years, up to the end of 1948, to 2945 Sunday Schools, 45,139 teachers, and 469,276 members. 1949 HAS BEEN celebrated Widely throughout the Church as the Sunday School Centennial. , Every stake and nearly every ward and branch conducted appropriate home-comi- t) ' for the Hawaiian Islands. Being the only book of its kind, it is widely used throughout the islands similar to the postal guide in the United States. Having worked at the Genealogical offices several times during her life, Miss Lindsey has been successful in gathering a genealogical record of the Lindsey family from 1700 down to the present day. She was scheduled to fly back to the Hawaiian Islands this week. Stake Genealogical Conventions Set GENEALOGICAL con v e ntions will be conducted for seven stakes on Sunday, Oct. e 30. Bear River and South Bear River Stakes will hold a conjoint convention with the 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. sessions in the stake tabernacle in Garland with 'Henry E. Christiansen and E. Kay Kirkham representing the ,Genealogical Society. North Box Elder and South' Box Elder Stakes will hold a conjoint convention with the., 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. sessions in the stake tabernacle in Brigham City with James M.
