identify this condition with any effect or arsenical spraying collar rot killing trees the second condition condition mentioned by mr whipple and which I 1 Is s commonly recognized throughout the united states as collar rot apparently confines fi nes itself very largely to the ben davis apple with the gano as a second choice in three or four places in n utah this disease has been alarm bingly prevalent tito the first orchard in n which it was found by the writer belonged to mr lars nording of 0 hyrum mr nording planted ben davis and jonathan alternately within two or three years after planting the ben davis began dying and continued to die until now they are nearly all gone As fast as a tree died mr air nording replaced it with a jonathan in the same bole and so far has not lost a single jonathan many off f mr wordings Nor dings trees died before the orchard had been sprayed and they have not died more rapidly since spraying has fias been carried on when the writer began ills his co codling moth experiments on oil the orchard of I 1 lion thomas smart of logan this his orchard was chosen because it had not been sprayed previously and yet yat at that time trees were found dead and dying from collar rot these trees were in one small section of the tha orchard and others in the same section have died since the efte spraying has been carried on but it has not extended to other parts ot of the orchard at morgan w which h ich is sit situated bated in a high mountain valley a large number ot of bert ben davis trees were planted a few years ago and before any of these orchards began bearing and before spraying had commenced numerous complaints were made of the loss ot of trees through disease in the central utah experiment station the orchard mentioned previously contained two acres of ben davis on oil the lower end and in this end a number of the trees had already died from collar rot when the arsenical sprays were first applied the writer Is fairly familiar with most of the orchard regions of both colorado and utah and has visited many of the sections of the northwest arid and in no case has lie he observed that there has been any more loss from these causes in orchards that were cared for a and nd sprayed than in neglected ones which should it if dr addens He conclusions are correct be immune from these troubles it seems therefore safe to conclude tha that t arsenical poisoning is not the cause of ei therone of the hoove abovementioned above mentioned conditions in the colorado bulletin a third condition is mentioned as oc curing in a few cases in which the sap oozes from the trees and forms a gummy or cyrstal line mass this condition the writer has never seen and therefore is not in position to discuss it might also be well to tate stale that the conclusions of the colorado bulletin are apparently based on few observations ions in the field the greater amount of work having been done in the he laboratory hundreds of miles from rom tile the spot where the damage occurred that no experiments were carried on on fruit trees the only attempt to test tile the effect of arsenic beng ing on greenhouse plants and that the he only trees known to have died from rom arsenical poisoning were the two wo that were killed by the soluble of soda which we know would have killed them immediately it if it had been sprayed on the foliage where the bulletin is valuable this bulletin it if rightly interpreted will be of great value to a great arid and growing industry this interpretation however will be one of very guarded warning against intemperate and excessive as well as needless use of arseni cals it will only serve to strengthen the position of those who are urging the use of the new method ot of spraying first worked out and published by the utah experiment station and later confirmed by other western workers in these utah bulletins 87 and 95 experiments it has been abundantly proven that one single driving spray if correctly applied at the right time will do more to protect an orchard tor for the entire season than any number of s sprayings spray ings as ordinarily applied dr Ile headden adden shows in his bulletin that even a small amount of alkali or even of common salt alone in the water will serve to render some of tile the arsenic of spraying solutions soluble which serves to explain a it umber number 0 of things that have happened in this state in the past in one case an ch cli ardist sprayed his entire orchard with paris green and practically ruined the crop by burning while his neighbors used the same brand of poison without serious injury this particular however undoubtedly used water taken from a well heavily charged with alkali as known to be strongly alkaline no doubt rendered his paris green soluble and caused it to burn the foliage while the neighbors asci water from their irrigation ditches and in t that 1 ia t c case a s e ec experienced p e arte rte n ee d 1 little i tt i e d if ri er i il t ty y 1 in n a another ii 0 t h er e case as e a an n or c h a r d ls t s sprayed p a y e of a young orchard with lead arsenate of an approved brand and burned the foliage from the trees and even killed tile the weeds and sugar beets beneath this was his first spra spraying yng and it is very probable that II if the matter could be investigated it would be found that lie he had used a barrel which had previously contained salt c or or brine and that a sufficient quantity remal remained 11 in the barrel to free the arsenic this bulletin will also serve as a warning to those contemplating planting trees in strongly alkaline soil even where the ground water is not cl close ose e enough boug h t to 0 t the h e s surface u r f ac e to b be e considered d e d dangerous n ge r ot is f for 0 r i it f t the he al alkali k all is capable of freeing the at arsenic it would not be very long before the soil would be so impregnated that it would not only kill the trees but re render n the ground unfit for any other crop the matter is one that calls for careful and exhaustive investigation and for cautious and guarded statements of any kind until results of these investigations are known hasty and ill advised statements with reference to the use of arseni cals has already done a great inquiry in the I 1 tain lain region by retarding the development ot of the fruit industry our most profitable pron table crop conclusions that the condition described hy by dr headden and attributed to the e effects ff a acts 0 of f a arsenical rs ei i i e a 1 s spraying p ray i n g occur u r ocen over v e r wl widely d el y d distributed t s t r i but e d a areas r e as and d have killed hilled thousands of trees on which no arsenic has ever been used and that therefore arsenical poisoning cannot be the primary cause of this condition that the only trees positively known to have died of arsenical poisoning were the two to which a soluble was applied a compound which no one has ever used for spraying purposes thab thattie Th atthe aj entire subject of arsenical po poisoning Ss s a matter for careful and exhaustive exhausts i voi investigation and that any statements prece proceeding eding that investigation should be of the most guarded nature that there Is danger in the use ot of even slightly alkaline waters ln inthe the application of spraying materials and that there Is a probability of danger from excessive spraying on strong ly alkaline soils that it has been abundantly proved that a single spray by the new method Is much more valuable than the excessive spraying as formerly practiced thus obviating the greater part of the possible difficulty that those who are using the driving spray or contemplate using it ma may y do so with the assurance that they are using the least dangerous method possible if danger there should be and that the best and most productive orchards in the state are the ones baes that have been the longest sprayed |
