He prepares them himself. Youngsterof 8 VViris Prizes With Goiirds Making eptrits and winning blue has become an interesting pan of e hobby that young Tommy son of EuMelenthin, genia V. Melenthin of Draper, hadn't thought about when he started growing gourds and-- Indian corn two years ay.,. or Possibly the youngest member of the American Gourd Society, he has learned how fo grow and cure the gourd, as well as the best way to display them in shows. He has received some ideas on how to make use of the matured, cured gourd which be plans to put Into effect now that winter is Just around the corner. HAS OWN GROUND A small plot of ground that has not become a burden on hot summer days, when small boys would rather be climbing trees, is the responsibility of this young gardener. Here he has planted the bills of gourdsv and close by are tct be ' found the rows of colorful Indian and a few plants of strawberry corn. Assisted by his mother, Tom has tied strings between posts for the vines to climb over. Next year he has greet hopes that a real trellis can be erected for them to climb. Blueprints of a suitable trellis have been sent to Tommy by the national group to which he belongs. They advise use of a roof similar to that of a garage, using lath, supported by four corner posts. The vines would cover this completely and the gourds, being heavier, would hang down through the roof, where the grower and could view the fruits while standing under, the roof and without having to move a leaf era vine. 14 HOBBY BEGINS ribbons-InAllower-sho- : ,L. :.! . ft0:::.:,-,.4?!: , ii 40 4, ()nun LIEEC'S , ..1 , ' , ' - .,, . , ,,, , ..,,,4,, .c.,, Fred Aiigsburger Directs Group Planning Fall ,Flower Festival i1 1 . - . f 7412gr!' er After the frost has killed the vines, harvesting and curing the matured fruits begins. Thus starts a fall and then a winter hobby for the young gardener. Only matured fruits are gathered and stored In a cool dry and airy place. During the drying process, the young gardener will notice that on some parts of the gourds small spots of mold will be working. These spots resemble very tine white powder, but this mold does not destroy the gourd. Rathei, it enhances the aPPearante 01 thegourd by leaving a mottled pattern which many may think is a natural coloring. - After the drying process has been completed, which may take anywhere from several months to a year the gourd is waxed and polished. Farmers have . more fingers, hands, arms, legs, missing than any other occupatioal group in the cotmtry. The same engineers are working on an even lighter concret in which air is used in place of sand. The air bubbles insure excellent insulation, and make the new concrete far lighter. 11 This year.
