''Freedom Festival," Fourth giant five-dacelebration, will have meaning for most of the city and many visitors from throughout the state. The celebration will give citizens of Provo and surrounding communities an opportunity to observe solemnly an independence theme which is in the American way of life. When celebrants spend their dollars for the host of colorful and exof the celebratiort, they citing events tly contribute-alrecto the Welfare Program of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-daSaints through the four Provo stakes of the Church. And third, more than 3,000 persons within the wards and stake of Provo have a direct hand in planning, pre 7 paHng and staging the gigantic program over the five days of the celebration. ' - The four stakes, including Utah, West Utah, Provo and East Provo, combined their efforts in 1947 in the Welfare Program. Approximately 500,000 pounds of milk Scope t I ,I a 4 ir,.1 I .: was produced of which 225,000 pounds was turned to the general welfare committee on assignment. The farms, using volunteer labor, produced 20 acres of beets, 15 acres of sweet corn, 25 beres of silage corn, 3,500 bales,of bay,,1,400 bales of straw, 45 head of hogs and 108.000 pounds of potatoes during the production season last year. From the initial investment of $28.000 the assets currently are valued it $I50.000 and the program is nearly paid for in full, according to Victor J. Bird. president of Utah Stake, and chairman of the project- Revenues from the faint operation and the July Fourth celebration are used to retire the investment obligation. The project is operated wider direction of the four stake presidents, Including President Bird, President G. Marion Hinckley of West Utah Stake; President Aura C. Hatch of Provo Stake and President Sherman T. of East Provo Stake. Months of planning and preparation are spent on the actual Independence Day celebration. Dr. Da Costs:Clark. general celebration chairman. estimated this year that a total of 400 persons in the four stakes serve on the official staff as members of his 32 committees for the festivities. This number mushrooms into more than 3,000 persons on the ward level when the celebration is staged, he said. The festival opens Saturday, June 30. with a Relief Society bazaar at Pioneer Park in Provo. Bread, cakes, buns, needle work and other items which have been prepared by Relief So ciety members in the many wards are placed for sale. Rides, concessions and -s- hows also open Saturday.
