Show ARE AEE WE WRONG the schools of this and other districts will begin la in the near future and we trust the teachers will pardon us if our ideas do not altogether coincide with theirs perhaps we may be wrong our ideas may be ante q equated bated and really unworthy of consideration in this advanced stage of enlightened civilization but it seems to us that the real rudiments of education are no longer taught in the schools of our land with the thoroughness that ought to characterize our district schools especial is this true as regards reading and sp spelling elling young men and women who seek instruction in telegraphy steno stenography gr ap hy and typewriting although well informed on general subjects are woefully w deficient in the fundamental antal principles of the english language in spelling especially a lamentable deficiency is shown in the examination papers of our common school graduates in ili many instances from one cne halt half to two thirds of the words in ordinary use are misspelled and even some of the teachers are but little better in this respect this is apparently ly a hard arraignment but it is nevertheless true it seems to us that too much atten tion is given to the higher branches before the rudiments have been thoroughly mastered we believe more attention should be given to reading and the training of f the voice boys and ing school should be more thoroughly I 1 drilled in reading aloud to develop cevelo P tl the vocal organs and train the modulations of the voice ind and not only in reading but in spelling and reciting we believe that more attention paid to these matters by both teach arsand pupils would improve our schools in our opinion it is a mistake to crowd pupils into the higher branches too loo soon before they are fully prepared tor for them the foundation of a house should be laid first and made strong and solid and we believe the same rule applies to education it Is gratifying we admit to both teacher and pupil and a also iso pleasing to the parents to crowd and cram to the utmost limit but does it pay wasatch wave i |
