As a part of ASWC, the Judicial Council serves the students by ensuring fairness and justice for the student body. It also enforces the constitution and bylaws of ASWC. Through enforcing the constitution, the Judicial Council provides balance within ASWC. It has final say in constitutional decisions and is to take whatever steps necessary to ensure justice. JudCo is all about being fair to students, said Associate Justice of Business KitoTemkin. The Judicial Council proves that fairness through an appeals process. In one occurrence this past spring, a student was denied a request to access the Opportunity Fund, money reserved for educational ventures. He filed an appeal, and it was brought before JudCo, Temkin said. After a hearing and a careful review of the laws, the Judicial Council ruled that the request should be approved. If they get shot down we really want to give them another chance, Temkin said. In the opportunity case dispute, a student was able to directly benefit by utilizing the Judicial Council as a resource. Were here to serve the stu- dents, Temkin said. In addition to student disputes, the Judicial Council oversees all hearings and has the authority to issue an order of action. This can only take place after a hearing has been held, and all orders of action must be followed. Hearings help hash out issues, said Chief Justice Chris Gibbs. Gibbs said that when a hear- P O 00 C o I 4 3 uO 0 1 CL. ing is set, it gives everyone a chance to be heard and for a solution to be proposed. All members sit in on hearings, and decisions are reached by a majority vote. Its good to get those different perspectives, Temkin said. Gibbs said that the judicial Council is contacted when formal, written complaints are issued. Students are able to become involved in the Judicial Council after submitting a resume, doing an interview and being selected by the Chief Justice. Many students are unaware of the services that the Judicial Council provides. Lisa Swift, a senior biology student, said, I didnt know we had one, what the heck is that? Dont be discouraged though. Student voting is crucial in representing one of the most underrepresented groups. Whether youre passionate about gay marriage, drug policy, or immigration, politicians only listen to their constituents. mud-slingin- g, Voting is the fundamental way in which we participate in our government. Advocating for what you believe in is powerful and can influence the election. Voting is easy. You can sign up to vote by absentee ballot and never worry about having to go to the polls. Registering is a simple process. Stop by the ASWC office to pick up a registration from or visit vote. utah.govcollege to register online. Remember, students have the right to vote in the cities and states in which they at- tend college. No one likes a hypocrite. Dont expect to complain about jobs, the economy, or your vision for America without first voting. Dont let our nation be controlled by the generation before us. Foreign policy, student loans, employment, along with a multitude of other issues affecting students largely depend on voting. By not voting you exclude yourself from any input on how our nation treats the world around us. Whats more is CAFE pert teahouse that we are in competition with Utahs ten other schools to register the most amount of students on a percentage basis. The school that wins will be personally presented a trophy by the governor. With only 3,300 students, winning should be easy for Westminster. As part of this effort we are also offering a $200 inventive to any club or organization that can register the most students.
