In all honesty, all parties are at fault But for the sake of convenience, let us assess the Republican National Convention. Paul Ryan, the GOP Vice President nominee spoke at this conference. In terms of public speaking, he rocked the house. He was personable, witty, and engaging. You couldnt look away from the screen, and his attacks on President Obama sounded like valid and understandable critiques. But that was only if you chose to listen to die cheers ofthe crowd. Luckily for us, fact checkers were on the prowl And boy, did they hit a gold mine. Not only was Ryans speech full of errors, it was full of blatant lies. Most people will jump to the conclusion that the critics come from networks such as CNN or MSNBC but when Fox News starts calling you out, you are in trouble. In an article written by Sally Kohn, a contributing writer for Fox News, she states, to anyone paying the slightest bit of attention to facts, Ryans speech was an apparent attempt to set the world record for the greatest number of blatant lies and misrepresentations slipped into a single political speech. Ryan placed blame upon President Obama for the closing of a GM plant in his hometown in Wisconsin. EDITORIAL - During Obamas campaign in 2008, he stated that during his presidency the government would work to keep factories open. The fact is, the plant closed during Bushs administration. Ryan went on to blame Obama for downgrading the credit rating and taking $716 billion out of Medicare. Across credit rating was downgraded was due to the Republican Party refusing to raise the debt ceiling. Unfortunately, this is very common; on both sides of the political spectrum politicians often misrepresent information in order to support a point Now its already a common perception that politicians arent very truthful. But has anyone ever wondered how we reached the point where blatant lies are supported by standing Its keeping tabs on our elected officials, we have "delegated the task to news outlets and talking heads. We allow them to voice our opinions and to make sure politicians are doing their jobs. We vote for these people. Shouldnt we know what they are voting for? Shouldnt we know where they are getting campaign money? Shouldnt we know what their actual beliefs are? Its concerning that many of Ryans political stances are unknown to voters. Did you know that Ryans viewpoint on abortion is that it should be completely outlawed, even in cases of rape and incest? Did you know that Ryan wants to increase taxes 63 64 67 68 71 72 73 of for 95 the population, yet create tax cuts for millionaires and billionaires? Shouldnt we be upset that at a national, televised convention, a man that could possibly be in one of the highest elected offices in the country is stating blatant lies as if it were factual information? As the Democratic National Convention begins and as Election Day draws near, I encourage everyone to take a closer look at what these politicians are saying. Because though it may not seem like it, what these politicians believe in have dramatic effects on our lives. So listen to their speeches, watch their campaign ads, and ask questions. I believe that when you start asking questions, you will uncover some information that you had no idea existed. It may make you mad to learn the truth, or it may encourage you to support someone. But at least youll have an educated opinion. And that within itself is a victory. So go forth and become aware Westminster students! Ill be right there with you, and maybe through our learning we can vote for someone based off of their beliefs, not just on what tie they wear or how big they smile.
