Show I JU. fl I jt " P In I "1 W' A Samantha Branch la StafFWriter s majority of Westminsters time our for-m- er mascot was the Fighting Parson. Administrative Assistant to the Dean of Students and Veterans Coordinator Karen Hendry has been at Westminster for 25 years. She remembers when Westminster had a mascot that didnt quite inspire fear. Our first mascot was the Parson, which is an word for a minister, said Hendry. Luckily, in 1999 the administration decided it was time for a change. Hendry describes the though process; well, nobody knows what a Parson is, and we arent a religious school old-fashion- ed anymore, maybe we oughta get more up to date. So a committee brainstormed up some ideas of possible new mascots and ran it by the campus community and we ended up with the griffin, Hendry laughs. Students, faculty, and the community in general may joke about being the Griffins, adding it to the (fairly large) list of attributes that assimilate Westminster College to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, but it seems to be out of love, not mockery. ASWC Vice President and economics major Karl Gerner thinks the Griffin is a good mascot for Westminster. I feel like the Griffin represents excellence and regal-nes- s, right? Camber Stoddard, the Attorney General of ASWC and economics major jumps in, A lion and an eagle... 'X. Across nt the Sudoku puzzle, each row, column and box must contain the numbers 1 to 9. People may laugh at our mascot but the Griffin students and faculty seem to agree that it is fierce, especially compared to a Parson. When Westminster was established in 1875 the school was named Sheldon Jackson College after the founder. Westminster was a Presbyterian school from 1875 until 1896. Gerner and Stoddard already have people in the ASWC office laughing, and agreeing that the Griffin is a pretty awesome mascot when Gerner realizes an important connection between the Griffin and Westminster. The Griffins the king of land and air. Westminster kicks ass at skiing and we have an awesome aviation program. There it is. A Parson is just not a fierce mascot, Gerner laughs. Hendrys description of the Griffin is along the same lines. She smiled as she described the Griffins. So we ended up with the Griffin, which of course is a mythical being. The Griffin is fierce and swift and strong, Hendry said. And with a huge smile on her face, one of those smiles that express humor and pride at the same time, she adds I suppose the underlying idea is that the Griffin can whoop anybody. Students and faculty have a lot to say about the Griffin. Aj Ariss, a sophomore lacrosse player and his friend Anders Sigourney, sophomore photography major have a hilarious conversation about the mascot outside of the library. Enthusiastically Ariss describes the Griffin. Its a combination of the two coolest animals ever - a lion and an eagle, he pauses to laugh. The griffin is an improvement on a Parson because nobodys afraid of a Parson. You can ride a Griffin into battle! You cant ride a Parson into battle, Sigourney said. You can try, laughed Ariss. After they catch their breath Ariss ends the conversation with put a Griffin versus any other mascot and they would lose. Period. Executive Assistant to the Provost, Leslie Freeman, has been at Westminster for about nine years, she remembers the Fighting Parsons vividly. One day Jed Arveseth rode into the plaza on a donkey! Freeman said. Jed Averseth was one of the presidents of ASWC. Freeman likes the new mascot compared to the Parson. She howls with laughter and continues We can pluck your bloody eyeballs out! I think ruling from the air and the ground is awesome on the offense and defense, said Pat Shea, a lawyer, Adjunct teacher at Westminster, and associate research professor of Biology at the University of Utah. The Fighthing Parson, thats an oxymoron, Shea said. Paul Presson, associate Provost for Institutional Research and Assessment agrees. I prefer the Griffin of course. Its hard to strike fear in opponents as a Parson. Ill smite thee, Shea said. Kaitlynne Gibson, freshmen marketing major, likes the Griffin better than the idea of a Fighting Parson. Even though it makes me feel like we kinda go to Hogwarts, she said. Her friend Kevin Lucy, freshmen environmental studies major likes it too. Dude, I dig the Griffin. I think its pretty cool. You get the lion and the eagle. You get a double spirit animal. While Lucy explains why the Griffin is so cool Gibson is in the background trying to decide what noise the Griffin would make. After a series of rawrs and caws she decides on Racaw! Freshmen Elementary Education Major and Circulation Assistant at the Library, Elizabeth Sauve likes how the Griffin makes us seem more like Hogwarts. I wish we would go to Hogwarts, I wish thats what the Griffin meant, she laughed. I think its cool, I like it.
