Show Senior art show opens in Jewett Two photographers, five potters discuss their plans for the future David Patterson Staff Writer Its their time to shine! said art Professor David Baddley in regards to this years senior art show. Last night Monday, March 29 marked the opening reception for the seniors final exhibition. The show is on display in Jewett through the end of April. They have had four years developing themselves as artists, Said Baddley. This is their capstone experience According to Baddley, the senior art show is entirely student produced. From the pieces that are chosen to how its presented and advertised, the only thing the faculty does is help put it together. The art department as well as my fellow students are always trying to push the envelope, finding new techniques and new ways of looking at art and making it, said senior Mark Sanders in an email. Unlike other majors that develop specific career goals, like business, education, and nursing, the art major at Westminster is designed to be specialized. . I transferred here from SLCC last year and immediately found a new creative direction due to the individuality of the students and the open manner in which classes are taught. said senior photographer Mark Gilmore. We are small enough to help each student get better at whats important to them, said Baddley. Whether its going on to graduate school, working in galleries, or life as an artist, we can give each student specific attention to their interests and their artwork. So what is important to art majors? Youll have to visit the exhibition to get details, but heres a glimpse of the artwork youll find, along with an idea ofwhat they plan to do in the future. I I i ! Future Plans: Graduate school Assuming Im accepted into Westminsters MAT (Masters in the Art of Teaching) program, said LaFluer. I plan to teach elementary school (not art, as is usually assumed). I believe that incorporating art into and throughout the curriculum in education can begin to solve some of the struggled faced by educators in dealing with diversity in the classroom. Art speaks a language that is accessible to all learners, regardless of learning ability, social andor ethnic background. v I also hope to keep working on my own photography. I have submitted my work Mark Gilmore familiar, but unknown. Ultimately I plan to open a studio and make a career of it. VOLUME XLIII: ISSUE 14 I hope to stay involved with ceramics, hopefully exploring new techniques. Art has been such a big factor in changing my thought process that I hope to never loose the passion I have for it. I am going to seek out dental school in the near future and know this experience will aid in my vision and work. 10 |
