Show W S Professor Larry Anderson retires Gaining weight, gaining musde The bacteria expert reminds students to let life happen Jenni Stokes Staff Writer There is nothing perfect in life except living. These few words sum up the knowledge Professor Larry Anderson wishes to pass on to the students ofWestminster College. Hang loose, let it happen, he said. Anderson, an associate biology professor, has an outlook on life that he hopes to have impressed on the students he has come in contact with over the 10 years he has been at Westminster. I think we put too much pressure on ourselves in our 20s said Anderson, I see my students so stressed out. This is the best time of your lives, dont worry about school. Let your life unfold. Anderson received his undergraduate degree in Bacteriology from the University of Washington and his graduate degree in Microbiology from the University of Berkley. Anderson, a native of Seattle, Wash, then spent seven years in Connecticut as an associate professor at St. Josephs College and researching in the lab. He applied for a teaching position at Westminster College in 2000 as a way to get back into full-titeaching. He was offered the job, and moved to Utah to embark on a new adventure. Anderson has taught a variety of sciences courses at Westminster including everything from general biology to May term courses on historical plagues and emerging diseases. Andersons extensive background in bacteria and viruses helped him educate the nursing majors in clinical microbiology, which he said was one of his favorite courses to teach because of the importance of the subject, in terms of its impact on society and health. Anderson said that the best part of teaching at Westminster has been his positive experience with students, watching them succeed. Its' so gratifying to know youve had a part in these students lives and had a hand in helping them mature, excel and do good things, Anderson said. The rewards from teaching are absolutely the success of your students. When asked about his memorable experiences at Westminster College, Anderson smiled and noted that he couldnt narrow it down to one. Although, there was this one student, said Anderson. Ill never forget, he was having a difficult time, struggling, but I pushed him, I helped him out hes in graduate school now. When Anderson finishes teaching this May term, he will begin his new job as a stay at home Dad. He has three children, ages nine, 11 and 13 who he is looking forward to spending more time with. Anderson is essentially trading places with his wife, who will be me attending Westminster in the fall to earn her Masters in Public Health. Anderson said he is excited to be more involved in his childrens lives. I already help them out at school with science and their science fair projects said Anderson, who is excited about his daughters upcoming science fair project. Naturally the experiment is based on bacteria, Andersons main expertise. Anderson, who turns 60 this year, admits that his life has been pretty frantic, working 11 months out of the year, and is looking forward to taking time off. He plans to spend four to six months enjoying his free time before he embarks on another endeavor.Anderson said hed eventually like to return to teaching as an adjunct professor or possibly return to working in the lab part-tim- e to keep him busy. Although he refuses to make a set plan for his future. Life wouldnt be interesting if we knew the whole story beforehand, not knowing is the excitement, he said. When asked if hed returned to Westminster, he confidently responded that he would not. I like to close the door on things and be done with them, said Anderson. I want to go out on a good note, leave on top. Theres always something new to experience and you wont be able to do it if you havent let go of the II past. Well, not really. I just feel stronger. Not that my arms are bulging with muscles, but my body is more toned. Week eight and week nine of my , "1 workout project was good. I worked out 1 and kept to an eating plan. I weighed myself and Im at 248. So Ive gained weight but Im not disappointed. Im actually thrilled as weird as that sounds. I know my weight gain is because of muscles forming from my continuous efforts of getting into shape. On the bright side, I feel much stronger, and I can beat my husband at arm wrestling. How sweet is that? During week eight I worked out three times and learned different cardio, strength training and isometric exercises. Oh and never forget to stretch before and after a workout. If you dont stretch, then your body ends up really stiff and ouchy all over. I learned the hard way after one workout session and my body hurt for days. So I reached out to my family and friends on Facebook, recommended a really cool web and my mother-in-la- w site to teach me different stretch positions. The web site is called Sports Injury Clinic, and you can find stretch exercises under the Rehabilitation tab. During week nine I got sick and I still worked out. Heres to dedication and commitment, my friends. My personal trainer, Brian Hin, was awesome with me, and we worked on strength training and cardio this week. I feel pretty good working weights in strength training exercise, but I really suck at cardio exercises. Some cardio exercises Ive noticed focus on maintaining your balance while keeping your core (stomach) tight. For example, if you do a jumping jack Youre in a standing position by jumping with your arms and legs raised and then back to your sides. While youre performing this exercise you have to keep a balance when you raise and lower your arms and legs so you dont fall forward. Well, I always seem to lose my balance and I fall forwards or backwards, but Im practicing on keeping my balance. If you know me, you know Im as clumsy as Bella Swan. But J I have to keep trying. vii? ii 4& At !if! ft jf ) if 7 & SC"1 4 I feel good some days and other days I often wonder what Ive gotten myself into trying to become healthy. Going to the gym for me is difficult. Im not afraid of the gym, Im more afraid of people watching me workout. Im a person and I often wonder what people are thinking while Im working out. For example, Brian will have me do a jumping jack and Im worried about falling over or my stomach hanging out. But regardless of what others may think of me while Im working out I learning to tune out the world and perform my exercises. I think I go on autopilot most of the time to make it through a workout session. From what Ive learned these past weeks while working out is that keeping your body healthy is an ongoing everlasting project. Its a huge commitment, but I owe it to myself to love body enough to take care of it and live a more healthy life. Now I am off to the gym to practice keeping my balance and then Im going to challenge my husband to another arm wrestling match. self-consci- ous MT CITY ACADEMY Now Enrolling for 201 0-2- 01 C 1 . j X A Few Openings 1 r V- itts' it v Still Remain - Call Now! h Ceiled Preparatory, Public Charter School for Grades Tuition-Frc- o Lake's Best Kept Secret!
