The shop has been the stand-b- y walking-distancoffee spot of mine since freshman year. I love this place. I stuck with the Karamel Sutra latte even after it moved across 2100 South to McClelland St. Sugar House Coffee is often described as eclectic. Owner Bob has kept the character of Sugar Houses hipster culture alive with a book exchange, funky local art and mismatched coffee mugs. Amazing chalk art on the menu board and a mural of the Sugar House business district on the west wall provide cool things to look at while you relax on the mismatched furniture upstairs and down in the coffee ce shop. Another great atmosphere addition are the live bands Sunday through Thursday. Some of my favorite visits have been unexpectedly relaxing to the sounds of a local band with coffee in hand. r But lets get down to the business of food and drink. On Sunday I decided to head out to Sugar House Coffee for a breathe of frigid air and homework time. The baristas were friendly and helpful in the tradition Ive come to expect from Salt Lake City s first coffee shop. I ordered a caramel latte for $2.90 and a poppy seed muffin for $2.25. For just over $5, 1 had a nice little breakfast to help me get started with the day s workload. I thought about getting a croissant, but stuck with the muffin since its one of my fave foods from Sugar Houses vegan friendly menu. The caramel latte was delicious. The Sunday barista is one of my favorite staff people. Shes very friendly and helpful, plus when she asks how you are she she actually listens. But beyond amazing person-nes- s, also makes the best Karamel Sutra latte of anyone on the current staff. The muffin was okay. I dont know where Sugar House orders the muffins from, but they are good in their original state. However after being wrapped in plastic for a day, I can tell the muffin would be better fresh. Mind you, it wasnt a terrible muffin just not quite worth the $2.25. 1 shouldve gotten the croissant. The drinks menu also includes an assortment of teas and smoothies along with the usual espressos, mochas, coffees and lattes. The staff is always more than happy to customize any drink to your specifications. The food menu includes a number of pastries like cakes, pies and cookies from Carols Pastry Shop and other local places. Sugar House also offers a lunch menu including burritos, nachos, soups and sandwiches. I like that everything on the menu comes from local producers, what I dont like is vegan food. Cheese just doesnt taste like cheese without the dairy. Im sorry that so many vegans are missing out on the tastier things in life. Then again, they probably have a million more karma points than me. Oh, well... About half way through my latte, I realized the music at Sugar House was actually good. Its the kind of place were the employee chooses the so theres no guarantee if youll be listening to hip-ho- p, country or rock on any given Sunday. But this Sunday, it was some mellow rock of the Pink Floyd vain to push my writing along. In my experience with Sugar House Coffee, how much I enjoy the visit is largely dependent on the barista. Not to say, I havent had some great memories at Sugar House even with an inexperienced barista and a long wait. From the music to the artwork to the patrons Sugar House Coffee is still one of my favorite coffee shops even if the da s success is dependent on the person at the counter. Sugar House Coffee is a definite mainstay on the list of places to go.
