Jonathan Larsons a jrSoeimiQfioes Raises Disturbing Realities When The Westminster Players production of Extremities, by Mastrosimone, opened this past weekend raising some upsetting and disturbing realities. This play presents the concept of what a rape victim would do to her rapist if she had the opportunity. The writer got the idea to create this play after meeting a woman who had endured the violence of rape. There was one moment during her attack that she possibly could have overpowered him and gotten away, but instead she hesitated and was raped. She discussed with the writer how she always wonders about that moment and what would have happened if she had gotten away. this case went to her court rapist got off free, leaving her in constant fear for the rest of her life. This woman was part of a mere 16 percent of rape victims who are brave enough to report the crime. The other 81 percent go unreporled for various reasons such as fear or not wanting to damage the rapists or their own reputation. This figure is devastating, especially considering that only half of these reported criminals are convicted. Even those who are convicted often end up with a short sentence and the victim is left in fear. The lead. Erica Johnson, pulls off a good performance both as the victim and later as the vengeful and confused aggressor. The rapist, played by Colin Crebs, seemed a little less convincing in his role and needed his character to be more intimidating. Marjories two roommates, played by Brittani Rufener and Shannon McLean, did a moderate job, but at times seemed d or not enough in character. Extremities definitely brought up some different concepts of role reversal and really brings the reality of some of these disturbing statistics to light. It is interesting to d this play to experience and begin to understand what a victim goes through. The playT will run this weekend, Thursday7, Dec. 8 through at-ten- Saturday, Dec. 10. Tickets are free for Westminster students, $5 for faculty and staff, and $8 for Broadway cast, are featured in this film. Benny married their landlords daughter and has gone from being their friend to being their enemy. The daily lives of these characters are portrayed well in this film. The movie conveys the ups and downs of the characters not only through their dialogues, but also through song. e The song La Vie is definitely a unique one that has become a favorite. The song blatantly throws out controversial topics that are considered by many to be taboo, such as sexual orientation, sex and drugs. One of my favorite lines from the song is Emotion, devotion, to causing a commotion. It is a line that shows that they know theyre poking at controversial subjects, but that they dont care. The soundtrack to the movie is a good one. Even though I dont like all of the Bo-hem- much stronger. The song Take Me or Leave Me is sung by Maureen and Joanne as they are fighting at their reception. Even in the way they walk while singing it, you feel the angry passion racing between them. Rent is a film which shows that even in the middle of such misfortune, passion and optimism can flourish if only we live each day as though it is our last one. The movie lasts about two hours and 15 minutes and is rated PG-1- 3 for mature content, drugs, sexuality and strong language. |
