Show THE FORUM 6 April 13, 2005 Basketball Team Ms in Honors Suicide Walk April 16 Dave C. Cannell Staff Writer Being ranked No. 9 in the nation in any event is something to be proud of. The recognition, the excitement and the good feeling of being in the top of their league is just what Westminsters mens basketbaU team has experienced this season. Finishing the season as of the NAIA Athletic (National IntercoUegic Association) Frontier Conference, the Griffins dominated the basketball court. They finished with a record of 12 2 in conference play and an overall co-cham- ps Academic All American: Steve Cramer, Ben Stock, Nick Buroker and Jared Ruiz. Jared Ruiz was also awarded the All American Honorable Mention, which is awarded to only a few athletes around the country. Ruiz averaged 13.7 points a game, and helped lead the Griffins to nationals. With This season was one of the best the school has ever had. Jason Long, Assistant Coach -- record of 24-1- 0. Jason Long, an assistant coach, said This season was one of the best the school has ever had. The Griffins season is only the beginning of the good news. The mens team had five players who made the new nominations for Westminster athletes, our school has a total of 20 athletes who have been awarded the Academic All American. To be considered for the award, student athletes have to be juniors at Westminster and maintain a 3.5 GPA or better. Griffins Mens basketball was put to the ultimate test when they had the chance to go to nationals in Kansas City, Mo. In the first round they played Oklahoma Baptist University, which was not ranked, and were upset by a score of 75-6ending any of hopes moving further on in the tournament. Although the Griffins play in a different tournament conference then the U, they were ranked higher all year. This gives the Griffins the bragging rights in Utah, said Long. Earlier in the season the Griffins played Azusa Pacific (who went to the national championship game and lost) and beat them. The Griffins also beat nationally ranked Carroll College in regular season play. This gave them an upper hand for next year. No matter how you look at the mens basketball season, it was a great time for the Griffins. Staff Writer Ballet West began its final performance of the 2004-200- 5 season Friday night, April 8, at Capitol Theatre, with Spring Sensation, an evening of three ballets including Concerto Barocco, Ghost Dances and Who Cares? I would like to emphasize to you how important I feel this type of program an evening of ballet is to me in my efforts to maintain and stimulate a first-clacompany and its audience, writes Jonas Kage, artistic director of Ballet West, in the ballets program. Kage compares the variety of dance techniques showcased at the evening of ballet to the decorating of ones living room with a mix of traditional and contemporary furniture. VChen placed together, he explains of the old and new, it makes an exciting and stimulating atmosphere and one complements the other. The evening began with the classical Concerto Barocco, choreographed by George Balanchine, and set to the work Concerto in D minor for Two Violins, composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Guest - - ss ever-changi- ng violinists Rosalie McMillan and Krista Utrilla accompanied the Utah Chamber Orchestra for the piece. Soloists Kristin Hakala, Michiyo Hayashi and Michael Bearden danced the ballet gracefully and with seeming ease. The women wore simple white ballet dresses that gently skimmed the air as they flowed across the stage. In the first movement of the concerto, according to the ballet program, the two ballerinas personify the violins, while a corps of eight women accompanies them. In the second movement, the male dancer joins the leading woman in a pas de deux. In the concluding allegro section the entire ensemble expresses the rhythmic vitality of Bachs FREEMASONRY music. The mood turned from classical to contemporary with the second ballet, Ghost Dances, choreographed by Christopher Bruce and set to a recording of South American folk songs by the Chilean ensemble I made this ballet for the innocent people of South America who from the time of the Spanish conquests have been continuously devastated by political oppression, writes Bruce in the program. Although I did not set out to make an overly political ballet, Ghost Dances was created pardy in response to the overthrow and assassination of President Salvador Allende in Chile in 1973. My dance concentrates on a group of ordinary individuals who symbolize the many caught up in political violence over the ages. The ballet began with the slight sound of wind and darkness, when seemingly out of nowhere three masked men, cosdressed in skeleton-lik- e tumes, appear and begin dancing The Ghost Dancers, performed by Jason Linsley, Christopher Rudd and Hua Zhuang, were eerily beautiful.
