Pepper Hayes discussed the diversity in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. She pointed out that Buffy the Vampire Slayer was not just a show about an attractive teenage character that wears revealing clothes and saves the world each week from the clutches of vampires and other monsters. Hayes posed the question of whether or not Buffys sexy appearance undermines a message of the role model? Hayes explained how Joss Whedon, the creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, wanted to create a hero out of someone who is not usually depicted as one. Hayes said that Buffys character loses respect because of the way she dresses. She compared photographs of Sarah Michelle Gellar, who plays the character of Buffy, to various covers of Playboy Magazine. The poses on the covers of Playboy were almost identical to the pictures of Gellar. The reason for these types of pictures is to garner higher ratings for the show through Gellar s appearance. Hayes pointed out the diversity in the shows characters, more specifically, Willow, played by Alyson Hannigan (some of you may recognize her more readily as the girl in American Pie who constantly recounts stories of Band Camp) is a positive role model for gay teens. The cast members are great exaggeration of every a American person, said Elwell. She said they cause us to laugh rather than be so serious. The Simpsons, created by Matt Groening, first aired 14 years ago on Fox. Since then, The Simpsons have had their hands in the various social and cultural issues that have occurred over that time.
