Man, these guys are old, said Westminster, student Devin Callaway when he entered the auditorium. The band members, who average 75 years in age, had the crowd laughing, hooting, cheering, clapping and swaying in their seats throughout the evening. All the while. Director Dough Boll passionately swung his arms and kept rhythm with his tapping feet. The band was very energizing, said student Rachel Hair. Its exciting to sit in the audience and feel the Members of the Pheonix Band rocked Jewett beat of the trombones, the trumpets and the saxes. Avid jazz fan Jeff Robertson agreed, There is something about a live performance that you dont get with anything else. Hearing the names of people like Frank Sinatra brings back memories, said Hair. Its fantastic having these older people with so much energy and enthusiasm for their work, said student Krystal Powell. It makes me for two hours on Saturday night. feel like getting up and dancing. In fact, the band had so much energy that it even entertained the children in the audience. audience member Jordan Kay said, We liked them really good. Both the audience and the band ended the evening with smiles on their faces and a feeling of satisfaction. Its like culture is coming back again, said Robertson. The team is also gearing up for the Ironman Triathlon hosted in Provo next June. The Ironman consists of a swim, bike, and 2.4-mi- le 112-mi- le run. Westminster Triathletes is one of the newest clubs on campus and is the only college triathlon club in 26.2-mi- le Utah. The Next Stage 1 September 11, 2001 i 4 1 Students, Pete Stavrides and Laura Edwards, started the club in response to the states growing interest in the sport and to provide students an opportunity to organize and train for races. During the fall semester the club will have regular open training sessions, as well as guest speakers such as Jo Garruccio, a four-tim- e world female champion and certified Triathlon coach. The club currently has 27 members. Cory Cardner and Tim Jensen, both members of the club, have never actually competed in a triathlon but have raced in the separate events. Both are looking forward to training and competing. Cardner said, Its great for people who like to stay fit. I dont think Ill be an Ironman but thats OK because staying fit is my bigger goal. Jensen said, I was a bit disappointed that Westminster didnt have a track or running team but I think Westminster Triathletes is a great opportunity to combine my three favorite sports.
