Students responded by expressing their concern in parkregards to the ing problem. The lower Nunemaker parking lot is the area where most of the residents park, given that it is nearest to the residence halls. ail The construction of Residence Hall 5 started today on the south end of campus and is scheduled to be complete by July 1,2001. "As of now we have 100 bus passes available, however if more are needed, we are willing to invest on them as long as it helps to solve the parking problem." In addition to the free bus passes for both on campus and off campus residents, the Student Life office and the executives of the college have encouraged students and staff members alike to car pool. Parking stalls have been reserved in the Northwest parking structure for those who join this program. According to Carolyn Perkins, Dean of Students, "Parking is the number one problem in most colleges across the country. Most of the institutions try to solve it by asking freshmen not to bring vehicles to school, something that we definitely do not want to do." Phil Alletto, vice president for Student Development and Enrollment Planning, explained why the college would not want to take such "drastic" measurements. "A lot of our residential students have jobs off campus," said Alletto. "So we understand that they need their cars for transportation throughout the city. We are hoping, though, that they will start using the bus passes until when all the construction is over." Morgan said that the school has asked Bud Bailey Construction not to make any noise prior to 8:00 a.m. "They will be allowed on campus at Gia Throndsen Jason Helme Amanda Shiner Engels Tejeda Photo Editor Maritza I. "We expect that their work day will end between six and seven pm. However, they are allowed by the city to work as late as 9:00 p.m.," he said. To accommodate the students who live on campus, two handicapped parking spaces will be left open east of the Nunemaker parking lot. Also, Perkins encouraged all students to contact campus patrol if they feel the need to be "safely escorted across campus" when they park far from the residence halls. Two security officers are available 24 hours a day. The $4.5 million structure will contain suites with different numbers of rooms. "There will bedroom suites, one be four-tw- o with three, seven with four, five with five, and six with six bedrooms," said Morgan. "In addition Residence Hall 5 will also have a couple of apartments for the Director of Student Life and a storage area." Alletto reminded the college "there are growing pains that we all most endure" when an institution like this one goes through the process of expansion. He reminded students that a few years ago the college had to face similar difficulties in order to complete the Giovale Librarjr. Today, he cannot imagine what we would do without it. "If the programs the college has implemented works, those difficulties should be minimal," said Katie Ogan, resident. on-camp- us |
