It was started when a few students went to Quinn, and inquired as to why Westminster did not have a pep band. Quinn began asking questions and found a tremendous amount of support and excitement behind the idea. Currently, the pep band consists of 20 students and three faculty members. Quinn said, "Anybody and everybody are welcome to join, including staff and faculty members." There are no auditions required and they have many students who have no previous experience playing in a pep band. There isn't much rehearsal involved; practice time generally runs 45 minutes prior to game times. When members were asked why they or anyone else would want to join the pep band (since currently it is not considered a club or a class, all funding comes from the music department, and there is such a great time commitment), everyone replied with overwhelming enthusiasm "it's one of the greatest things to be involved in," not to mention the fringe benefits of free pizza, travel (typically, at the collegiate level pep bands get to travel to tournament games), and "you get to be really loud and obnoxious!" Unfortunately, there is no pay involved unlike at a larger university. Quinn spoke with Tommy Connor, Athletic Director, and reported that he loves the idea and is excited about replacing the PA system music with live music. The first game the pep band will play at is November 18 Anyone interested in joining the pep band may contact Chris Quinn in the Jewett Center.
