Show J4rts & Entertainment Beat the blues and get . , by Dawn Kennally Forum staff writer The winter blues are here, and people are doing things they wouldnt normally do. Things like cutting their hair short, or taking up a habit they were proud of not having or breaking up with a long time steady. What does it all mean? Do they feel better after doing it? No. Whats the answer then? Doctors and psychologists would recommend exercise. Even if its just a walk around the block, to get out and get your blood moving will certainly fight the depression you and everyone goes through during these inversions. Wouldnt it be nice if you could associate exercise with fun ,or even romance ? I have a suggestion to make. Get a backpack and put some cheese and crackers, maybe some fruit left over from the holiday fruit basket and a nice bottle of wine or some hot chocolate inside. Then get a nice warm , blanket and maybe a portable radio. Now y dress warmly and try skiing! y for is everyone. skiing Contrary to popular belief, you dont have to be an athlete, and there is no fashion show going on like on the downhill slopes. People aged 2 to 92 can do it. All you do is glide, no balance is required, no lessons either, just watch the person in front of you do it It is as natural as walking. There are two places I suggest for crosscountry skiing, both have beautiful scenery and some history to them. Wasatch Mountain State Park, located on the. Midway golf course just next to the Homestead, has two tracks, one cross-countr- Cross-countr- 27-ho- le DtstrtaMd by Triton for traditional, parallel skiing and one for skating. Both tracks are 10 kilometers long. Skiing is available from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily and costs $4 a day for adults, $2 a day for children ages 6 to 11, and children under six ski free. The Homestead rents skis out of the golf course clubhouse. Those aged 12 and over can rent for $10 a day or $7 for a half day, while those under 12 can rent all day for $7 and half day for $5. As long as there is 20 inchess of base snow on the ground, the course will be open , , and groomed when needed. . A stop a little closer to home is Pioneer Trail State Park.located at 2601 Sunnyside Ave. Instead of trees and man-mad- e ponds, there are pioneer buildings lining the town of Old Deseret. The buildings themselves are closed, but the streets are open to roam I or glide. Park manager Mike Barker said, Theres a terrific base of snow on the ground, and any new snow we get is staying on the ground. The park is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, and the fee to enter the park is $1.50 for adults, $1 for children ages six to 15, and $6 for families. Those at the park Tuesdays through Sundays' can visit the Brigham Young Forest Farmhouse and the park visitor center, which are open from 1 1 a.m. to 5 p.m. Now, picture yourself burning 1,000 skicalories in one hour of cross-countr- y ing, then resting under a tree or along a mountainside on your warm blanket snacking on cheese and wine. This would make for a great Valentines date (hint, hint)! Mtoto SwvtoM Q i Admit it, its all you really want. Nothing else matters. If you have these three, you can have anything. Ellipsis, Westminster Colleges student literary magazine, delivers all three: Money, Power, Fame. Aoydhe published in Ellipsis will receive $20 per published page.
